Ball Review DV8: Nightmare //////////////////////////////////////

Hook 55 Length 14.5 Breakpoint Shape 16

Manufacturer’s Intent: “We wanted to generate something special for DV8’s new pro performance line with the Nightmare,” says Aaron Koch of Brunswick. “The new Class 8 re- active coverstock was developed to cre- ate good length and more total hook. The combination of this new coverstock with the new asymmetric Nightmare core delivers extremely quick response to friction with the most total hook of any DV8 ball to date.”

Core Design: The Nightmare core has a low RG of 2.50, a differential of .052 and an inter-

mediate Diff of .013. Combining this core with an aggressive coverstock will help encourage an earlier revving action with a smoother down-lane motion. A high-ratio layout, such as 60x4x20 dual angle, can help sharpen the breakpoint shape.

Coverstock: The Class 8 solid reactive coverstock is super-aggressive. The color combina- tion is an eye-popping mix of black, purple and lime solid. The surface comes Sia Air sanded at 500, 1000 and 4000 grits. Oil traction is slightly above average and response time off friction

is quick and strong. The Ra is medium, which is best for medium to medium- heavy oil patterns with the strong asym- metric core.

Test Results: The Nightmare will offer a motion range similar to that of the original Hell Raiser (September 2011) and the recently re- leased Hell Raiser Terror (August 2012), albeit with more total hook. With the coverstock material being more aggres- sive, we saw a stronger late midlane presence with a quicker move when leaving the pattern and encountering fiction. Even our 0x4x40 dual angle

layout provided us with strong backend continuation and above-average usabil- ity through transition breakdowns.

When to Use: DV8’s Nightmare will excel on medium to heavier oil patterns for players with matched speed-to-rev rate games. Those with more speed than revs will likely find more success with lower surface grit sanding such as 500, 1000 or 2000. Players with slower speeds may use some polish, which increases length and breakpoint angularity. This ball will be a welcome addition for those who like long and strong ball motion.
