As is the tradition following the Olympic Games, members of Team USA traveled to the White House in September to meet with President Barack Obama following the recent London Olympic Games.
Close to 400 athletes, which included many of those responsible for
the 29 track and field medals won in London, took part in the trip to the White House and the BP Congressional Reception, which was
held at Union Station the evening before.
Each athlete had the opportunity to shake hands with the President and First Lady Michelle Obama, who

led the U.S. delegation in London, and each of them took notice of some of the athletes as well. Vice President Joe Biden was also in attendance.
President Obama singled out Manteo Mitchell, who created inspiration in London when he finished his 4x400m semi-final relay leg after breaking his leg, by calling it one of his favorite stories of the Olympics. He also recognized Aries Merritt, who was fresh off both Olympic gold and a world 110m hurdles record, as “the hurdle guy.” He also made special notice of sprinter Tyson Gay and discus thrower Lance Brooks.
