Welcome W
elcome to the fi rst CIBSE Engineering Knowledge supplement. It’s another new step for the Institution as we seek to lay out our plans for the future, identify
the challenges we all face and prepare the profession – not only to meet these challenges, but also to outperform them. Naturally, open, transparent and direct communication is
essential if our members and prospective members are going to join us effectively in this journey. We deal with the future at the crossroads of the built-environment and engineering; it is an exciting, vibrant and demanding place to be. While the future may be uncertain, there is no doubt that the
currency on which we all depend upon is knowledge – the open sharing of the huge reservoir of practical experience that we have within CIBSE, the dissemination of research, and how our businesses in the sector continue to be successful. Through the launch, and ongoing development of the Knowledge Portal, we are ensuring this knowledge is available to all members. And with more than 50,000 visitors so far, this is clearly a valued tool (see article, page 7). We also want to raise awareness of CIBSE, make sure non-members and others in the industry are aware of what our members do, and ensure people know where to come for the right expertise. This supplement also sets

out where we stand on BIM, which is becoming increasingly important across the UK industry and beyond. It may be based upon cost reduction, but at its heart is normal engineering, a discipline that is focused on successful outcomes and avoiding costly mistakes (see feature, page 14). We also want to show the broad range of areas our members
are both interested in and working in. We have a large number of special interest groups and societies, and we want to make sure that members and non-members are aware of the added value that joining one of these groups brings (see our feature, page 22). Finally, we must not forget the importance of the new talent
coming into the industry. We need to continue to nurture and support the newly-qualifi ed engineers, and help them achieve their potential. I commend them to you, for they are hugely talented, very enthusiastic and a positive tonic in these testing times. We hope you enjoy this special supplement,
but if it leads to questions, or you want more information, then do contact us. After all, that’s what we’re here for.
