for graduates and final year students of the Lift Engineering programme at

the University of Northampton to present papers on the subject of

their research projects. The group is currently working with the University of Northampton to plan the 2nd

Lift Symposium. www.cibseliftsgroup.org

Building Simulation Group The CIBSE Building Simulation Group (BSG) was established more than three years ago with the aim of supporting good practice and informing CIBSE members of the role of building modelling and simulation in building services design. In the last two or three decades, more

and more reliance has been placed on using building and system simulation codes for design and performance evaluation. This has been more highly elevated in recent years, not only for complying with energy and building regulations, but also for incorporating low-energy solutions and renewable energy systems, and for meeting occupants’ need for better indoor environment quality.

The Group’s activities cover all areas of

building services simulations, including energy modelling, dynamic thermal simulation, computational fluid dynamics, plant simulation, lighting and acoustics. Since its inception, the group has taken an

active role in promoting and informing the profession of best practice in different areas of building simulation. This has involved a number of seminars covering related topics, some held jointly with other CIBSE Groups. Many of the group’s committee members are currently involved in updating the CIBSE Application Manual, Building Energy and Environmental Modelling (AM11). The group has also launched an annual

award for the best MSc dissertation from UK and overseas universities that includes a major element on the application of building simulation tools in the research. As building simulation is embedded in the activities of many of the Societies and other groups of CIBSE, the group is eager to collaborate with other CIBSE groups and societies. This collaboration can be in the form of organising joint seminars on topics of mutual interest, as well as joint publications. www.cibse.org

CHP-District Heating Group The CIBSE Combined Heat and Power (CHP) and District Heating Group helps raise awareness and disseminate knowledge about the technical and economic aspects of CHP-DH, including both conventional equipment and new developments such as fuel cells and micro CHP. Membership is open to any building professional and the group, which keeps members up to date with e-newsletters and access to CHP information and events, normally holds two conferences a year. The group’s mission is to increase awareness

of the potential benefits of CHP, and to encourage members to consider CHP and district heating as a matter of course. It aims to help CIBSE members become aware of the opportunities, feasibility and economics for CHP-DH and to encourage best practice in the deployment of existing CHP-DH technologies by ensuring that specifiers appreciate and understand both the building’s characteristics and how these influence the sizing, economics and integration of CHP-DH. Members also look to make sure that CHP-

DH is designed, commissioned and operated correctly and that users appreciate the need to monitor and evaluate performance, and how optimum operating strategies may be achieved. The group endeavours to keep members
