at the implications of globalisation and other international factors like population growth; and rapidly changing environmental conditions. The Board also identifi ed the way projects are procured as a key area for change – in particular, the build/operate approach; the requirement for guaranteed delivery and performance; and the automation of design processes – with particular reference to Building Information Modelling (BIM). The increased focus on the cost of operating buildings means that measuring and rating of design outcomes, and how today’s technical innovations will work in the future, were also identifi ed as important issues for the industry and its clients. That is quite a list, and some of these

subjects are discussed in some depth elsewhere in this publication. However, the context is important and many senior CIBSE members recognised that several could be regarded as

both a threat and an opportunity. For example, the international context expands the potential market for CIBSE expertise, but also throws up the likelihood of greater competition from overseas providers. UK engineering practices are looking abroad for work to compensate for the slow economy at home. What we do has to be a global effort anyway.

There is no point fi xing carbon emissions in your own backyard if the rest of the world continues emitting like fury. We do not live in a bubble. Tackling global emissions has to be a global effort and it is also an opportunity to export British, and particularly CIBSE, expertise in this area.

The internationalisation of our industry
