CIBSE ASHRAE The CIBSE ASHRAE Group was formed 17 years ago to strengthen links between the two bodies and encourage free dialogue and exchange of information between building services engineers all over the world. It now has more than 11,000 members, who participate in group activities, largely electronically as they are located in almost every part of the globe. Because of its truly international membership, most of the group’s presentations are conducted as webinars as well as physical meetings. It has a busy schedule of technical and

general interest presentations throughout the year and is now centred at University College London, where chairman Tim Dwyer is a teaching fellow. While the group covers an immense range

of topics in its meetings, there is usually a North American link to maintain the ASHRAE connection. Recent subjects covered include legionella management; fire and smoke protection; air conditioning historic buildings; and building information modelling. All the group’s events are free to attend and

follow online – many are held jointly with other special interest groups including the CIBSE FM Group and the Institute of Refrigeration. The group also organises the highly prestigious annual CIBSE ASHRAE Graduate of the Year Award, which was launched in 1996. The winner is sent to the ASHRAE Winter Meeting in the US every year where they participate as a VIP guest – generous cash prizes are presented by the Rumford Club to runners up. As part of the awards day, the ASHRAE president gives his or her annual lecture to the UK industry and takes part in a discussion with the heads of other professional institutions. This year’s awards event, which is also free

to attend, will take place at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers on 11 October. www.cibseashrae.org
