Welcome to your November/December issue of The Teacher, the last issue for 2012, which has proved a tough year for teachers and all public sector workers.

This issue highlights some of those difficulties teachers continue to face. Read pages 12 and 13 for an update on our action short of strike action and pages 36 and 37 for coverage of the TUC March for a Future that Works. There has never been a better time to join the NUT and get involved as a school rep. Find out how at www.teachers.org.uk/getinvolved

The NUT was busy campaigning on behalf of teachers at the party political conferences and the TUC, and you can read those reports on pages 15, 34 and 35.

Elsewhere, find out why Children’s Laureate Julia Donaldson thinks reading and libraries are the foundations of learning (pages 26 and 27) and read why former NUT member and Olympic gold medallist Helen Glover thinks sport is crucial for children.

Christine Blower, General Secretary
