Health & Hygiene

Teachers must lend a hand R

ecently released research from Initial Hygiene suggests that teachers need to encourage their pupils to wash their hands, as parents may be endangering their children’s health by taking a ‘laissez-faire’ approach to hand hygiene.

The survey of primary school children and their parents showed that over 40% of youngsters say that they don’t always wash their hands with soap after using the toilet, and 90% of the parents questioned said that they believed their children could be too hygienic and that ‘a bit of dirt might be good for them’

Dr Peter Barratt, Technical Manager, Initial Hygiene, commented: “Parents’ belief that their children may be ‘too hygienic’ is alarming, and schools need to take greater responsibility in nurturing better habits among their pupils.”

To encourage children to wash their hands, provide them with an appealing environment. The children’s trims from Initial Hygiene are an attractive range designed specifically for children to encourage healthy hygiene practice. These colourful and eye-catching trims fit in to the Initial Elite range of dispensers. Children’s trims aim to raise hygiene standards within children's washrooms.

Reading University’s SportsPark Gets Fit for the New Term

R eading University’s SportsPark VO2 fitness

suite recently benefitted from new equipment and is the first in the South of England to feature the new Precor Adaptive Motion Trainer (AMT®) with Open Stride™. The SportsPark, which opened six years ago, needed additional Precor strength and CV equipment as well as reconfiguring to cater for its 5,500 members.

David Givens, Fitness Facility Manager at Reading University’s SportsPark comments: “Having recently replaced the treadmills it was time to update our elliptical crosstrainers. We installed our first two AMT’s in 2007 and they

quickly became one of the most popular pieces of CV kit. We constantly try to improve the facility to meet high member demands and exceed member expectations and so decided to upgrade to the new AMT with Open Stride.” Additional amenities at the SportsPark include a 37m x 34m sports hall, two dance studios, squash and tennis courts and various outdoor grass pitches. It is also used as a base for the University’s elite rowers and Redingensian Academy Rugby players for all their strength and conditioning needs.

Katy Currie, a MSc Nutrition and Life Sciences student at Reading University said:

“The SportsPark is the best gym I have belonged to as it has a large range of resistance and cardiovascular equipment to suit all body shapes and abilities. The amount and range of equipment on offer means training is not interrupted at peak times. At last I have found a gym that ticks every box; plenty of high quality, effective and frequently updated equipment, highly knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff and a clean, new and inspiring environment.” Givens concludes: “We have been extremely happy with the reliability and physiological effectiveness of both the Precor EFX total body crosstrainers and AMT’s since we re-opened our fitness studio in 2007. To improve upon this service by offering the new AMT with Open Stride can only help us continue to deliver excellent performance and results in the future.” u01276 404 900 uwww.Precor.com
