What the retailers had to say:
“Trade generally during August was excellent for our two stores at Sheringham and Wymondham. As they say when the weather is right then we trade well. Good sunny weather certainly helped trade even though we were at sale price generally. Seasonal stock has cleared down well even though we have not made a lot of money out of the first half year trading. However we have to have new stock for next summer so we take it on the chin and continue in a positive attitude. “Early signs are A/W new arrivals being well received as customers look to retail therapy to cheer themselves up. The feel good factor after a sensational summer of sport has certainly rescued our season.” Roger Hare of Middletons, Norfolk.
“With the weather being so poor, we have started to sell the Autumn Winter stock during the last two weeks. As soon as new product arrives we are displaying it and customers seem very interested.” Andrew Marshall of Strolling4Shoes, Cumbria.
“A very mixed year! The weather has been so ‘non-seasonal’, when we were expecting sunshine, we got rain, when we expected rain we got overcast or sunny days. The weather plays such a big part in the footwear industry and being able to react quickly to the conditions thrown at us is vital. “Back to school was very encouraging, even in these difficult times when people are counting the pennies and hanging on to the last minute – the message that it is so important to ‘look after’ children’s feet seems to be getting through. “I think that back to school was boosted due to the fact that people made the shoes they had go to the end of the school year – Easter and May break were less busy than was expected historically.” Karen Little of Haswell Shoes, Nuneaton.
