KTZ doubles spending in 2011 K
AZAKHSTAN Railways (KTZ) reported improved
performance across its activities in 2011 following a year of increased investments in new infrastructure and rolling stock.
Capital expenditure totalled

double the level from 2010, and included investments in constructing a new line from Korgas to Zhetygen and Ozen on the border with Turkmenistan, as well as increasing the locomotive fleet to 110 units. There were also substantial investments to procure 7077 freight wagons,
34 passenger coaches, and two emu units, and repairs to 654km of permanent way. Freight traffic increased by 4.4% overall in 2011 to 279.6 million tonnes, while transit traffic was up by 4.9% to 223.6 billion tonne-km. More than 16.5 million passengers also used KTZ passenger services.
Alstom to supply 70 emus to Trenitalia
selected Alstom as the preferred bidder for a contract to supply 70 single-deck emus, each seating up to 280 passengers, with an option for 20 additional trains. However, two other contracts for 20 double-deck emus and 40 dmus have not been awarded because the bidders did not meet Trenitalia’s requirements for cost and delivery schedule. These trains are being ordered to provide new rolling stock for contracted regional services.

The single-deck emus will be manufactured at Alstom sites in Italy, including Savigliano, Sesto San Giovanni (Milan), and Bologna. The new trains will be
delivered to the regions of Abruzzo, Calabria, Lombardy, Marche, Umbria, Lazio and Veneto. In Lazio the trains will be used on shuttle services between Fiumicino airport and Rome Termini.

ALIFORNIA Department of Transportation
(Caltrans), acting on behalf of its counterparts in Illinois, Michigan and Missouri, has issued a notice of intent to award a contract to Sumitomo for the supply of 130 double- deck coaches for use on regional and long-distance services in California and the
