NDIAN Railways (IR) has announced it will invite bids in March 2013 for PPP contracts to establish electric and diesel locomotive production facilities at Madhepura and Marhoura in the state of Bihar. With an investment of some Rs 12.94bn ($US 238m), the Madhepura facility will assemble 8.94MW electric locomotives. Currently India’s sole electric manufacturing plant at Chittaranjan builds only 4.47MW units. The diesel factory planned at Marhoura will manufacture 3.73MW locomotives.

Stadler delivers narrow- gauge dmus to Italy: Italy’s Appulo Lucane Railway (FAL) has taken delivery of the first of 17 950mm-gauge dmus from Stadler, which will be used on regional services in the Bari area. The fleet comprises 11 two-car trains, which accommodate up to 110 seated and 86 standing passengers, and six three-car sets seating 169 with a standing capacity of 151. All of the 120km/h dmus will be delivered by the end of next year and will be used on the Bari - Altamura - Matera and Bari - Avigliano - Potenza lines.

Slovenia


The Transport Ministry has signed a ƒ40m contract with Thales to install ETCS Level 1 on the 350km Slovenian section of Corridor D from the Hungarian border near Hodoš to Lubljana, Koper, and the Italian border. Thales is working in partnership with GH Holding, Slovenia, on the project which is due to be completed in 2015.


South Africa


In preparation for the opening of the new manganese export terminal at the Port of Ngqura, Transnet Freight Rail carried out a series of tests during September on the Hotazel to Port Elizabeth line evaluating the performance of 208-wagon trains with distributed traction. The introduction of 208-wagon trains would allow the payload to be increased from 6552 tonnes to 13,104 tonnes.

A new 2.4km-long, dual-gauge electrified single-track link to the Port of Barcelona opened at the end of September. The line connects the new Prat dock with Adif’s 1668mm-gauge network and the Barcelona - Figueres - Perpignan mixed- traffic 1435mm-gauge high- speed line through Can Tunis yard.


United States
