ROC Recruitment and our sister company, temps-online, were founded in 1991. The company grew rapidly and in 1997 became one of Virgin Atlantic’s 100 fastest growing companies in the UK. We offer a bespoke and high quality service to our clients and candidates, placing permanent, temporary and contract roles.
I Q
n 2011 we established ROC Training & Apprenticeships. More companies are seeing the benefit of providing apprenticeship opportunities for young people and growing
a reliable source of talent for their business, we help these companies implement successful apprenticeship schemes.
What is the most important aspect of your work and why?
As a boutique recruitment agency we pride ourselves on providing a personal and customised service, an approach that is highly valued by our clients. This approach has enabled us to grow organically and in an industry with a notoriously high turnover, we have high retention levels and longevity of staff.
We take the time to understand our clients’ individual recruitment and training needs and develop innovative customised solutions, whether that means tailored training programmes, an innovative advertising campaign or running a selection centre.

Q
ROC recruit for Banking and Finance & Accounts clients, amongst others. Have
you found there has been a change in numbers being hired over the past few years?
Perhaps not surprisingly, there has been a reduction in the overall number of these vacancies; every vacancy we are asked to work on is a more considered one.
There has also been a shift in employers’ expectations of candidates, individuals with a broader skill set, who can add value in a number of ways, are highly sought after.
What are your opinions on the unemployment figures from the past
four years? Should businesses be hiring more, or is it down to the Government to kick-start the economy before that happens?
As a business we are affected by the economic climate and high unemployment figures as our clients are naturally more discerning when they hire new staff.
ROC are fully supporting the government in creating new roles for apprentices and it was for this reason that ROC set up a government funded training & apprenticeship division.
Q
What are the key issues you deal with on a regular basis?
In the current climate organisations are keen to ensure that every vacancy represents value for money and this can often mean changing priorities and job descriptions. Competition for candidates with a transferable and flexible skill set is high; our constant aim is to make sure it is our clients who secure these high quality candidates.
Q
ROC Recruitment is a member of the REC. Why is it important for recruitment agencies to be a part of the REC?
We find the REC an important resource for industry news and research. As a member of the REC we adhere to the REC Code of Conduct, a demonstration of ROC Recruitment’s commitment to the highest principles of ethical and professional conduct, above and beyond legal requirements
Q
Is there anything else you would like to mention that you feel our readers might
be interested in?
We work with organisations to develop apprenticeship solutions that directly address specific skills requirements; helping to identify
suitable apprentice roles within the company and appropriate apprenticeship programmes. The first question we are usually asked is how much will it cost us? The apprentice minimum wage is £2.65 per hour, although many organisations choose to pay more. We work with organisations so they understand the total return on investment, to help them choose whether an apprentice is right for them. Apprentices spend a minimum of 30 hours a week in the office. Once the apprenticeship is complete, many apprentices choose to stay with the same employer.
Q
Is there a growing interest in apprenticeships in this current
economic climate?
Yes, there is a growing trend for apprenticeship programmes to form part of the overall skills strategy for companies across all sectors, and this ensures young fresh talent is introduced into organisations.
Research also shows that most employers believe apprenticeships make them more competitive, more productive and reduce their turnover (Learning & Skills Council) and with a number of government incentives available (eligibility criteria applies), interest in apprenticeships is definitely growing.
We offer a range of apprenticeship programmes, including: -
Customer Service
Business and Administration Retail
Team Leading Management.
