SMOOTH OPERATORS

Renowned swim coach and H2Open contributor Paul Newsome has co-authored a comprehensive tome designed to take swimmers to the next level.

The latest training resource from Swim

Smooth, a 322-page, full-colour book, is now available and, like their website and training DVDs, is underpinned by the swim school's ‘total swimming’ philosophy.

Pitched at the intermediate- and-above swimmer, as well as their coaches, the book is nothing if not comprehensive. The depth of analysis in the book of the free-style stroke

will be familiar to those used to Swim Smooth’s education. Those that aren’t, including beginners – as the book is perfectly suitable for them also – will enjoy a thorough, if a lit le weighty, study of stroke technique, swim training and open water skills.

According to Swim Smooth's Paul Newsome and Adam Young, these three categories lie at the heart of successful swim training and form the foundations of their book.

Divided by these 'Three Keys', the book seeks to establish a

pat ern of training in which each are developed concurrently. Utilising also the principles of cause and eff ect, at times the book reads more like a philosophical tome than a swimming manual. 'Key 1', chapters 5-23, is technique and makes up by the far the majority of the book. 'Key 2', chapters 24-32, studies swim training and off ers some examples of structured sessions as well as the study of the 'Critical Swim Speed'. And fi nally 'Key 3' looks at specifi c skills for open water swimming including sighting, draſt ing and even what to work on when swimming in a wetsuit. Chapters 17- 23 feature Newsome's unique Swim Type System, which is as much about the psychology of swimming as its physicality, and is a useful guide to identifying individual areas of development. Swim Smooth has always sought to make its training resources accessible and the book follows this easy approach. Language and tone is understated but its power is in its ability to communicate ideas with casual ease. It's an excellent compendium of work and sits well with Swim Smooth's website, DVDs and blogs. ○
