AFS NEWS Conference Hits Sand Issues “ I’m very satisfi ed with

my long-term print advertis- ing program in MCDP—it’s the only advertising I do. It gives me great visibility and name recognition, both with existing customers and with new ones. And the steady fl ow of new business it brings in easily justifi es the investment.

The sold-out sand conference attracted attendees from all over the U.S. Metalcasters from across the country convened in India-

napolis for the sold-out AFS Conference on Sand Casting Technology and Materials, Sept. 10-12. “T is was the fi rst AFS conference specifi cally addressing

sand casting technologies and materials in many years, and it was obvious there was a big need for this type of focused ap- proach,” said Steve Robison, AFS senior technical director. During the conference, attendees participated in discus-

sions on operating procedures with their peers and heard various presentations on improving productivity and pro- duction quality, addressing environmental concerns, testing sand quality, and developing new materials and chemistries for sand and binder technology. Real-world case studies were presented on lowering binder content, purchasing sand reclamation equipment, modeling sand cores, con- ducting wet tensile testing, maintaining sand systems, and reducing emissions. T e conference concluded with tours of nearby sand

casters Harrison Steel Casting, Attica, Ind., and Grede New Castle, New Castle, Ind. “T ere was a lot of energy at this conference and we

received great reviews from those attending,” Robison said. “T e presenters covered new technologies and presented real world case studies that were relevant to the daily foundry procedures of the attendees. T e two plant tours defi nitely added to the value.”
