EDITOR’S NOT E BOOK Rock Star Status
BY JOY FINNEGAN EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
On November 8 and 9, Aviation Maintenance magazine will hold our AVM Summit in London, UK. We are excited to bring this event to the world aviation community for the second time. Last year, we focused on one topic, PMA parts and called the event the International PMA Summit. This year we have expanded. We will again have the PMA Summit track but we have also added an additional track called MRO Technology devoted to software and technology advances for aviation maintenance businesses.
Bruce Dickinson, lead vocalist of Iron Maiden and aviation entrepreneur, will be the keynote speaker for the AVM Summit in London on November 8 & 9.
If you have watched any of the Olympics this summer, you might have heard the TV announcers mention “…heading over to Earl’s Court,” for some event coverage. Our event is also being held at Earl’s Court so it’s great to have that connection! Iron Maiden lead singer and rock star, Bruce Dickinson, will be our keynote speaker. We are very excited about this recent announcement! What do Iron Maiden and Bruce Dickinson have to do with aviation maintenance you ask? If you saw my editorial last month, you read about Dickinson’s new business venture, Cardiff Aviation, an MRO he is opening in Wales. Cardiff Aviation will have facilities to complete the full range of maintenance for airliners and other large aircraft and hopes to provide services to major and independent airlines. Cardiff will also offer ancillary aircraft maintenance and training activities, according to the rock star. We are eager to hear Dickinson’s vision for Cardiff and what he sees as the way forward for his new business venture. This should be fascinating given the challenges before him, and all of the European MROs already in business, at this time. Please see our cover story, “OEMs Rattle and Roll European MRO Market” on page 16. This in-depth article by Charlotte Adams

says the aviation MRO “survivors of the economic meltdown and never-ending crisis can take pride in their accomplishment but can’t rest on their laurels.” Competition is fiercer than ever worldwide, with the increasing presence of engine, component and airframe manufacturers in the aftermarket. We spoke with numerous MROs, component repairs facilities, engines shops, OEMs and consultants to get their read on the European market for maintenance services and where the European market is headed. Lufthansa Technik’s Walter Heerdt, senior vice president marketing and sales for the company says oil prices, taxes and other charges are impacting both airlines, and subsequently, MROs. David Stewart, vice president of ICF SH&E International, a consulting firm with a focus on aviation management, says “Independent MROs are pressed by OEMs on the one hand and large airline MROs on the other…” He offers some advice on how to deal with this increasing pressure from all sides. Stewart’s ICF SH&E colleague, Ian Ferguson, will be speaking on our PMA parts track at the AVM Summit. FL Technics CEO, Jonas Butautis, feels OEMs need the support of independent players to succeed with local clients and stresses the need to build mutually beneficial relationships with them. British Airways Engineering’s James Murray-Smith, general manager, material services and commercial, also believes strategic alliances are going to be more important than ever. Murray-Smith’s colleague at British Airways Engineering, Rajan Bindra, engineering systems manager, will present on the software and technology track of our summit as well. Another speaker at our summit will be Yoav Ziv, VP, marketing, for
Realization. Realization is a company that helps businesses, including MROs, manage their processes more efficiently — something that will be key for the victors in the MRO wars. Realization has helped MROs such as Delta TechOps and Lufthansa Technik make dramatic improvements in their turnaround times and throughput. Ziv and I recently discussed how his company helps MROs improve their work flow by making very small adjustments to traditional ways of thinking. Read more about what Yoav Ziv and Realization will discuss at our summit in the Q&A on page six of the Intelligence section. There are priceless bits of information coming in our event and this is just a taste. To this end, I bring your attention back to our AVM Summit on November 8 & 9 in London. We are bringing two very focused tracks of information to you, designed to help your MRO operate more efficiently, cut turn around times, increase throughput, hone training, evaluate employees and save money. Please join us to see and hear what rock star Bruce Dickinson says in person and to see what the other “rock stars” of aviation maintenance (our speakers) have to say as well. We hope to see you there. AM
