Pacifi c Palisades, “where the mountains meet the sea,” is a village within the city of Los Angeles. The long-established neighborhood is almost fully built out. New construction usually means infi ll, and our latest demonstration home is a case in point.

T

HE JUST-OPENED VISION HOUSE®

is on an infi ll lot

that was once the yard and swimming pool of an ad- jacent home. The narrow, long lot faces west, but the

home still makes use of passive solar fea- tures and natural ventilation. The design has plenty of room for both a green roof system and a 7.22-kW photovoltaic array. Yet, the project—for all of its green fea- tures—blends in and complements the neighborhood’s existing homes. Builder Structure Home has been an enthusiastic partner for Green Builder Media’s West Coast showcase home. Principal Robert Kleiman says he seeks balance between the natural environment and built environments, with regard to a range of factors—energy effi ciency, dura-

bility, indoor air quality and the sustain- ability of available resources. “In addition to physical beauty and lifestyle function,” he says. “all of these components defi ne the quality of a new home, now, and into the future.” VISION House®

Los Angeles is a col-

laboration among Green Builder Media, Structure Home, architects KAA Design Group and P2 Design, landscape designer MJN Design Studio and Jill Wolff Interior Design. The home’s target market is af- fl uent, educated professionals, including families with children—the Pacifi c Pali- sades demographic. The collaboration combines the VISION House®

green tenets with Struc-

ture’s 23-step “Journey Outline,” the compa- ny’s trademark framework to facilitate its “collaborative design integration process”

(CDIP). CDIP systematically integrates all of the design consultants/vendors/trades- people. Kleiman calls Structure’s building approach “Whole-Lot Living.” “The thoughtful consideration of the

entire living system is essential,” Kleiman explains. “We try to show how housing relates to its natural environment. In my view, that’s the only way we can be re- sponsible stewards to our clients. “Completed homes realize signifi-

cant positive benefi ts,” he adds, “includ- ing design and product quality, cost effi ciency, environmental impact, healthy attributes, construction schedule and du- rability.” VISION House®
