DJ Q The Archive Q Recordings Right on Q

Bassline may have dropped rapidly off the commercial radar but this compilation of tracks old and new from DJ Q proves that even without the shock of the new, the Sheffield scene hasn’t lost its original appeal. Q’s recently found wider fame for ‘Brandy & Coke’ and his subdued remix of S-X’s ‘Woo Riddim’ but it’s when the Huddersfield producer goes for the throat, as with bassline staples ‘Teabag’, ‘Shottas’ and ‘Dirty’ included here, that he winningly comes into his own. There might seem little differentiating these 25 tracks but it’s all part of the appeal — this is bassline in all its manically wriggling, crazed, uncontainable glory. Rivalling dubstep for bass obsession — newcomers might mistake it for a new sort of hyper-wobble-house — but pitched from the opposite end of the spectrum, Q’s shapeshifting low end has that most crucial of club qualities: huge bolts of energy that never let up. Oliver Huntemann PLAY! 04 Ideal Audio Let the music PLAY

Not too long after his latest studio album, Oliver Huntemann unleashes the fourth instalment of his ‘PLAY!’ mix series. Each one is a live recording of the Ideal Audio boss DJing around the world, and this one finds him in fine form in Melbourne. Covering much more ground than the over-produced and aforementioned LP, across two CDs the Hamburg veteran takes in a wide remit of contemporary house and techno sounds, each one club-friendly and floor ready. The first disc is the most varied and human, as it segues from Eats Everything to Nick Harris to Nico Lahs, with the second CD delving deeper into steely minimal grooves and fist-pumping techno courtesy of more than a few new M-nus associates. Technically proficient as you’d expect, there’s also a new and exclusive Huntemann track ‘Melbourne’ included along the way. Kristan J Caryl

Cocoon Compilation L Cocoon 6.5

Dark love letter

Cocoon takes things deep, funky and moody for the next instalment of its well-to-do letter series. Early cuts from Tale Of Us, Rampa & Re.You and Tim Green set the tone promisingly, but there is little to get excited about here despite a valiant hypnotic groove from Sian... unless straight- up minimal is your bag. Maxxi & Zeus Quiet Village Remixes Pyramid Of Mars 7.0

Summer swooning

Heady re-interpretations of Villalobos, Allez Allez, Francois K et al make up this comp of Quiet Village’s (aka Maxxi & Zeus, otherwise known as Radio Slave and Joel Martin) most noted remixes to date. Warm melodies, languorous beats and hazy summer vibes will make you wanna head to the beach. We like. Emmajo Read

Thomas Gold Axtone Presents Thomas Gold Axtone 7.0

Real trouse music

Before the ‘trouse’ revolution really took over, Thomas Gold was paving his own distinct path right down the middle of the trance and house scenes. Suitably, then, his debut compilation on Axwell’s Axtone label is a much classier affair than what we’re used to. Far more fun than it has any right to be. Angus Paterson

Gildas & Jerry Kitsuné Soleil Kitsuné Kit-sunny

In an age of uncertainty, revolution and change, there’s something very comfortable about slipping a Kitsuné compilation into the CD player these days. New genres come and new genres go, but the French fashion/music powerhouse steams on regardless with their familiar brand of electro/indie/disco/pop, and judged on those terms the label’s latest mix, ‘Kitsuné Soleil’, doesn’t disappoint. It’s unlikely to be spoken of in hushed tones on websites quacking on about complextro or skeletal gloomstep, but label boss Gildas and Jerry Bouthier have assembled a mix featuring established names such as Friendly Fires, M83 and Metronomy alongside newer acts such as Jupiter and Housse De Racket that would make the perfect audio backdrop for a hot day in the garden burning meat products with friends. Silkie skills

Closer to efforts from Kode9 and Youngsta than Chef and N-Type, the ninth ‘Dubstep All Stars’ is one of the series’ most single- minded entries. Spotlighting Silkie & Quest’s smoothed-out slant on dubstep, it could easily be titled ‘Deep Medi All Stars’ — all but nine of the tracks here come from Mala’s label, while only eight aren’t by the duo. A happily solipsistic affair from two DJs who know their tracks inside out, the AntiSocial pair pull together a typically cohesive and thoughtful affair, with an assurance that makes Mizz Beats & Jay Retro’s grinding ‘Level 0’ and nu-grime roughage from Swindle all seem totally of a piece next to Quest’s downtempo ‘Deep Inside’. Quietly surprising, the pair’s brand of dubstep might be long established but as a still-unique corner of the scene unlikely to reach saturation point, this is a welcome break from trad-halfstep and unhinged tear-outs. Silkie & Quest Dubstep All Stars Vol 09 Tempa

A&B show us again just how adept they are at staying on the cutting-edge of the type of pumping trance that works perfectly in massive clubs like Amnesia. It may not boast the eclectic technical wizardry Paul van Dyk managed with his landmark ‘08 instalment, but it’s an A-grade dose of Ibiza excess. Angus Paterson

Ibiza prep

No surprises, but plenty to fuel the crowds until it’s time to stumble out of the club and onto the nearest beach. Thomas Gold and Nicky Romero rub shoulders on disc one, but a dirty electro mix of the awfully named Str8jackets from Sam Walker and Teej on disc three wins. Tristan Parker

Sofrito Soundsystem International Summer Soundclash Sofrito 9.0

Totally tropical taste

Impossibly funky vibes from the ‘70s through to present day mixed by those reliable Sofrito boys, offering enough Cuban funk, Afro-beat and Latin disco — from the likes of Midnight Groovers and Lord Shorty — to make it feel like you’re living inside a Bacardi commercial Adam Saville
