BURAKA SOM SISTEMA, GRAND CENTRAL, MIAMI
THURSDAY AUGUST 9 BURAKA SOM SISTEMA, MR. PAUER
What’s a four-letter word that summarises Miami? We’ll give you a hint. It starts with a B and ends with S-S. Yep, bass, and Buraka Som Sistema hit Grand Central with a serious dose of it. Deeply rooted in Portuguese street beats and Angolan kuduro, their rhythms are also infused with drum & bass, hip-hop, moombahton, grime, dubstep and techno (you get the picture) to create a sound so unique that we’re not sure that anyone else does it better, or at all quite frankly. You could also argue that Grand Central is a standalone situation in its own right. We love it for its exceptional soundsystem, of course, but the uniqueness comes from the raw, music-first, downtown energy it stays true to — a vibe you don’t come across in venues of this size when club-hopping on South Beach. Marry that with Buraka’s intensity on a hot Miami August night and you’re sure to get images that will be engrained for a long minute. There’s been no shortage of seeing Buraka Som Sistema on festival bills across the country, so we say get intimate with the beats when you can. And you can define intimate however you’d like...

ALVIN RISK, IVY ROOFTOP, SAN ANTONIO TX
WEDNESDAY AUGUST 8 ALVIN RISK
Say what?! Basically, there’s not much we can tell you other than drilling home how beyond sick Alvin Risk is live. Sharing the stage with Kaskade on the Freaks Of Nature Tour, he very much holds his own, commanding audiences of thousands while he surfs through genres like a genius. After seeing what this guy can do, it’s no wonder that Skrillex proclaimed him as the next big thing, scooped him up in an unmarked car at the Miami Airport during WMC, and pretty much signed him on the spot. True story. If you’re lucky, he may get on the mic and sing you a tune or two; before producing or DJing he was actually the lead singer in an electronic orchestra (yeah, that’s exactly what it sounds like, awesome). So, you can attempt to catch a glimpse of him as a spec on stage with thousands of people vibing out with you (because you will), or you can head over to the 300-capacity Ivy Rooftop in San Antonio for 10 bucks. Do the math. I know, we love you too.

BPM FESTIVAL, PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MEXICO
FRIDAY JANUARY 4 – SUNDAY JANUARY 13 LINE-UP TBC
Beach parties, we love them. But a ten-day beach party on the Mayan Riviera? That’s like a paradise within a paradise. Let’s see: beats, beach, beats, jungles, ancient ruins, beats, beach, rinse, repeat. Yes please! The BPM Festival 2013 promises just this and is staged to gather some of the globe’s finest talent for its sixth edition. Last year saw over 35K attendees and 200 artists across 50 events; our eyes and insatiable desire for exceptional music were satisfied and we expect the upcoming celebration to be no different. For a short time, Super Early Bird Ten-Day VIP wristbands are available. That’s a lot of events over a lot of days for a relatively little price. And you can get your dose of mysticism while you’re at it. That part is free. Really, these will go like wildfire, don’t say we didn’t warn you.
