Long Journey Permanent Vacation 8.0
Photonz
Veracruz Unknown To The Unknown
10
Portuguese duo, Photonz, drop their debut for label- rapidly-on-the-rise, Unknown To The Unknown. These three cuts have already found the stamp of approval from Jackmaster and the likes; from the tightly-wound vintage house-style of ‘Hurt Me Hurt Me’ to the robust electro fix of ‘Veracruz’, by the Shadow Dancer duo; both prepared for dancefloor pyrotechnics, played at the right moment. However, it’s the latter, in its original version, that’ll guarantee the response you want, whenever you choose to play it — a superb marriage of the more emotive side of Detroit techno with the tough rhythms of old school Chicago house music. Utterly original stuff.
Azari & III
Into The Night Loose Lips/Island 8.0
The duo is back in the game with some brand new material following a string of unnecessary remixes of past hits; this could be the fate of this latest spurt of original material from Azari & III, as it exudes the classy brilliance of the likes of ‘Hungry For The Power’ and ‘Reckless With Your Love’. Perfectly timed and perfectly catchy house music that boasts a quality way above the superfluous set of remixes from the likes of Nicolas Jaar, Prince Language, CFCF and Renaissance Man.
Breakbot
One Out Of Two EP Ed Banger 7.5
Jamming the AM frequencies this summer is this seductive AOR/ blue-eyed soul number from Breakbot, charming ears with earnest Donald Fagen-esque lyricism. Taking the original mix away from the ‘easy gliding
062
airwaves’ are Oliver, DJ Sneak (fulfilling your filtered disco needs) and heavy electro vibes from Get A Room. Breakbot’s original mix and Oliver’s cool, mid ‘80s-style boogie remix are the obvious choices here.
Firas
Stray/For Those Who Know Body Work 8.5
Snappy disco/deep house bubbler from Firas, following the viral, DJ- only edit of Cassie’s ‘Just You’ that caused a fuss a couple of issues previous to this one. Punchy 808 drum hits and a thick NY-style bassline make the lead track a necessary club spin; sitting more than capable either side of seasonal anthems such as Julio Bashmore’s ‘Au Seve’. The more tropical, old school flavour of ‘For Those Who Know’ is yet another reason why you should purchase this indispensable release.
Hervé feat Ronika How Can I Live Without You (Make It Right) (Mighty
Mouse Remix) Cheap Thrills 8.0
Making advances towards the big room clubs is this robust effort from label boss Hervé, featuring equally strapping mixes from pal Sinden and nu-disco operatives, Mighty Mouse. For their version, the latter unravel the taut, skipping rhythm of the original to a much looser groove, with tumbling percussion and strobing disco effects, and the enticing vocal, delivered by Ronika, flows perfectly over the spiralling bass arpeggio.
Peter & The Magician
Memory Kitsuné 7.0
Energetic Euro-disco number, lavished with cute, fluorescent
melody and sugary vocal twists. Benelux production duo, Yuksek (Peter) and The Magician (noted for the 25 million-plus YouTube views of his remix of Lykke Li’s ‘I Follow Rivers’) are behind this latest for French electro-disco cartel, Kitsuné, drafting in a weighty remix selection to add ballast; these include Le Crayon, NSFW and Poindexter — the latter being the particular highlight.
Sandro Perri Changes/Love & Light
(Remixes) DFA
8.5
OK, so it’s not exactly new Zongamin material, but a remix will more than suffice for now; especially of this quality. His brilliant Linn drum-heavy fix skews the vintage 4AD-style haze of ‘Changes’ into a robotic, almost Colourbox homage. Elsewhere on this EP, another favourite producer of mine, Mickey Moonlight, remixes in reliable, idiosyncratic fashion. Eluvium and Max Gross work Perri’s nebulous, gazing pop in their respective mixes.
The Backlash/Shady Bunch
Fire/Diva Snap White 9.0
This is, in fact, a collective production between Dan Beaumont (Dalston Superstore), Severino (Horse Meat Disco) and legendary UK house producer, Terry Farley. The Backlash’s ‘Fire’ has Dan and Terry sat at the controls working a killer mid- ’90s-style dark garage tune; the type of track that you would have heard Junior Vasquez spin at the Sound Factory, NYC. Next up is Severino ‘n’ Terry behind the desk with ‘Diva Snap’, and as you would expect, this voguing house gem is nothing short of ‘fierce’.
www.djmag.com
Vintage house/Balearic- flavoured disco EP from the Permanent Vacation crew. Quality-assured all the way and the mid- tempo of ‘The Front’ is this particular release’s highlight.
Cori Josias
Takin’ It Straight Nang 8.0
Originally appearing on Metropolis Records back in 1983, this glossy Italo disco/pop tune gets a re-issue on Nang. Features all tracks from the original version, plus an updated 2011 ‘re-dub’.
Kola Kube Everybody Needs Somebody (Faze
Action Remixes) Z
8.5
Extended disco play from the brothers Lee, who stamp their familiar, exotic disco mark over this latest for Joey Negro’s Z Records.
Little Boots Headphones (Moon
Boots Remix) 679 7.5
Big remix from Moon Boots, sending this new Little Boots tune to giddying levels of euphoria. A seasonal favourite — no doubt.
TOBY TOBIASREKIDS / VARIOUS
01. KINDNESS ‘SEOD (Dub Mix)’ Female Energy “Fave track from the Kindness album gets dubbed out & sounds like a deep
New Romantic experiment.”
02. ROYALTY ‘Eroica (Instrumental Dub)’ 5 Easy Pieces “Love this instrumental, the UK’s version of Dam Funk — spacey, deep boogie
with serious impact, can’t wait to play this out, set opener I reckon.”
03. EROS ‘3’ EROS “Sounds like someone playing around with a Yamaha DX machine over an
808 — music to my ears.”
04. TOBY TOBIAS ‘Over Here’ More Music “Vinyl 12-inch taken from my CD album.”
05. TOM TRAGO ‘Lost In The Streets Of NYC (Actress Remix)’ Rush
Hour “I love Actress, especially when he puts a bit of dancefloor di- rection into it, and this just throbs. Heads down indeed.”
06. DREXCIYA ‘Journey Of The Deep Sea Dweller’ Clone “What a re-issue — timeless machine funk.”
07. JACQUES RENAULT ‘In The Jungle’ Let’s Get Lost Edits “I’m sorry to say I don’t know what the original is, but Jacques has done well
bringing this to the fore — pure deep, Afro-centric Nuyorican house vibes.”
08. VARIOUS ‘Epic Disco Vol.2’ Roller Boys Recordings “Four tracks from Mark E, Bogdan Irkuk, Prins Thomas and Ultracity. I can’t
choose a favourite, they are all great! But for now, let’s say the Prins Thomas remix is gonna WERK that floor.”
09. AWANTO 3 ‘Pregnant’ Dekmantel “Great modern label. This killer track is from an EP with a great Makam track
as well.”
10. FOUR TET ‘Jupiters’ Text “Mad stereo percussive sounds, sub bass, synths, weird vocals and another
classic Four Tet release.”
