Powerful Team USA Selected for London
eventually scheduled for Monday, July 2, but Tarmoh pulled out of the race, giving Felix the spot in the women’s 100m. Tarmoh was named to the Olympic team as a member of the relay pool.
RUPP RECORDS HISTORIC DOUBLE
It had been 60 years since anyone had accomplished what Galen Rupp did at the Olympic Trials in the 5,000m and 10,000m. And Rupp did it all in record fashion. The American 10,000m record holder became the first man since Curt Stone to win both events at the Olympic Trials as he also established Olympic Trials records in both races.
Rupp battled heavy rains to pull away from a field, which included Matt Tegenkamp and Dathan Ritzenhein, to claim the 10,000m. He then battled veteran Bernard Lagat, who is the current American record holder in the event, in the 5,000m. Rupp outkicked Lagat and ran his final lap in 52.4 seconds to win the race in 13:22.67 and better the late Steve Prefontaine’s Olympic Trials record of 13:22.8, which he set in 1972.
FELIX RECORDS BLISTERING PERSONAL BEST
While she was in the midst of discussions over the final Olympic spot in the women’s 100m, Felix remained busy in running rounds in her signature event – the 200m. She turned heads in the final in recording a blistering personal best of 21.69, which was the fastest time in the world in 2012 and is the fourth fastest time in American history. It also broke the Olympic Trials record of 21.77 set by Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988.
Felix has become one of the more decorated sprinters in history in the 200m. She is a three-time World Outdoor champion at the distance and has taken home silver medals in the past two Olympic Games. One year ago at the World Outdoor Championships Felix also won a silver medal in the event.
RICHARDS-ROSS CONTINUES TO SHINE
Sanya Richards-Ross continued to run fast in the women’s 400m in winning that event in an Olympic Trials record time of 49.28. Her times in the event in 2012 have remained close to the American record of 48.70 she established in 2007 and this season has recorded her fastest times since 2009 when she won the World Outdoor title.
Richards-Ross also qualified for Team USA in the 200m in placing third in a time of 22.22.
FAST TIMES IN MEN’S 110M HURDLES
Jeff Porter literally dove across the finish line to grab the final spot on the Olympic team in the men’s 110m hurdles to join reigning World Indoor champion Aries Merritt and reigning World Outdoor champion Jason Richardson on the squad.
Merritt flew through the finish in a personal best and then world- leading time of 12.93 and Richardson broke the 13-second
GATLIN BACK TO FORM
Justin Gatlin cruised through the finish line in the men’s 100m to see the scoreboard show a personal best for the 30-year-old. Gatlin won the race in 9.80, which significantly lowered his previous best of 9.85 from 2004.
After his win at the Olympic Trials, Gatlin kept his unbeaten streak in 2012 alive as he continues his return to the form that carried him to the 2004 Olympic gold medal and 2005 World Outdoor title. Gatlin is also the reigning World Indoor champion in the 60m.
Gatlin is part of a deep men’s 100m Olympic squad that includes American record holder Tyson Gay and Ryan Bailey. Gay ran a time of 9.86 to place second at the Olympic Trials as he continues his comeback from hip surgery in 2011.
barrier for the first time in his career to place second at 12.98. Porter was third in 13.08. A difficult team to make, American record holder and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist David Oliver finished fifth in 13.17.

BARRON CONTINUES TO SET THE AMERICAN STANDARD FOR RACE WALKING
Trevor Barron grabbed the lead from the start and cruised to establish a pair of American records en route to winning the men’s 20,000m race walk. Barron erased his coach Tim Seaman’s name from the record book at both the 15,000m and 20,000m distances. Barron’s winning time was 1:23:00.10 and he came through the 15,000m mark in 1:02:06.57 to set that American record as well. At 19 years old Barron became the youngest race walker to ever make the American Olympic team.
Seaman placed second in the event and established four masters 40-45 American records in the process.
