Setting the Association Standard Maura Kent STEPHANIE BROWN-TRAFTON

standard

In 2012 the association gave out a total of 25 grants to help track and field athletes reach the Olympic Team Trials with the more deserving athletes receiving up to $1,000 to help with the costs of training and travel. Herman said they had a total of 13 women qualify for the Olympic Trials.

The list of elite athletes involved with the association has included John Godina, Magdalena Lewy-Boulet and Stephanie Brown-Trafton.

In 2012 Brown-Trafton, the 2008 Olympic gold medalist in the discus and Jesse Owens award winner and 2012 Olympic Trials champion, worked with the Pacific Association to host a high performance throwers competition. Brown-Trafton also serves as the association’s Athlete Chairperson.

“What we do well is we endeavor to provide programs for members of all ages,” Herman said. “We have championships for all ages. Our goal is to meet all of the member’s needs. We try to do everything as best as we can.”

The events they have run have included the 2010 Junior Olympics and USA Outdoor Masters Track & Field Championships and the 2011 World Masters Outdoor Championships.

While the basic commitment from its volunteers is important for the association to grow, it is the long term commitment that is even more beneficial. It is another reason for the success of the Pacific Association.

Herman has been a member of USA Track & Field since 1984 and the Pacific Association Chairperson since 1998.

Dave Schrock, who is the Pacific Association’s Vice President and Coaches Committee Chairman, first became involved with the association 42 years ago. Schrock began typing results at all-comers meets as the association’s Competition Secretary in 1970.

“We truly stand on the shoulders of giants who for decades have provided sound and committed leadership that enables our association to continue to serve our members,” Schrock said. “At every association event or function I attend, I am continually gratified at the passion and expertise committee chairs and members contribute to our sports.”

At the end of each day and the end of each event, it’s not about the pure numbers or any dollar amount for the Pacific Association. The concerns are centered on doing all they can to provide the best possible opportunities for everyone they can.

“My favorite part is watching the members smile,” Herman said. “The happiness they feel fulfills the programs we are providing. My whole purpose is personalizing our association. We are very thankful for everyone.”
