USGBC announces changes to LEED 2012
Vicwest appoints new president
Vicwest, a division of Vicwest Inc., Oakville, On- tario, Canada, announces the recent appointment of Paul Lobb as the company’s new president and general manager. Lobb’s professional development is supple-
mented with extensive experience in senior leadership roles with well-respected manufacturing and distribution companies. His most recent posi- tion was as COO of Dynamic Paint Products Inc.,
Mississauga, Ontario, where he led an aggressive growth campaign, including U.S. and international markets. Throughout his career, Lobb has demonstrated
a strong track record of leading change manage- ment initiatives and building the infrastructure to support earnings growth. His focus on customer relationships and operational excellence are key to the future strategy of Vicwest.
In response to concerns raised by members, core LEED users and stakeholders, and in an effort to pro- vide the marketplace a view of the full LEED program experience prior to ballot, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has announced that it will delay ballot on LEED 2012 until June 1, 2013 (or potentially earlier in 2013 if USGBC members and the market indicate readiness for ballot). Because of this date change, LEED 2012 is being renamed LEED v4. “LEED pushes the envelope to bring transfor-
mation to the market—that’s what we do,” says Scot Horst, senior vice president, LEED. “We remain committed to that, and to making sure that what we deliver is complete and can be success- fully implemented.” In addition to the ballot date change, other
actions include:
METALCON introduces new conference format
The 2012 METALCON education format offers more in-depth learning opportunities both in the classroom and on the exhibit floor. It provides up to 30 hours of education while moving from the traditional 1.5-hour multiple-track program to longer sessions tailored to specific disciplines led by a team of experts. According to Claire Kilcoyne, METALCON
show director, the format is more efficient for attendees while offering them a more valuable learning experience. “We created this concept based on research with attendees and speakers. The three-hour format helps focus on details of a specific course. Attendees can earn three hours of AIA Learning Units and three Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for each full session they attend. This can maximize attendees’ time by allowing them to plan a full day of education with sessions in the morning followed up with live demonstrations on the show floor in the afternoon. Because it’s so comprehensive we’ve themed the conference, ‘Education, Empower- ment, Excellence.’” The new format offers five sessions per day
that run from 8:30 to 11:45 a.m., with a 15-min- ute break, on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 9 and 10. Topics are designed to meet the needs of residential roofing contractors, commercial
• Keeping LEED 2009 open for registration for three years.
• Continuing to ask for the market’s assistance in “test driving” LEED v4 to gain important insight during a time when improvements in usability infrastructure can be made.
• Committing to a fifth public comment that will open on Oct. 2, 2012 and run through Dec. 10, 2012 to take advantage of Greenbuild where the USGBC will hold public forums and educational sessions on-site in San Francisco. This will help stakeholders better understand requirements as well as any final changes that may appear in the new draft. Greenbuild will also serve as a platform to debut new forms, submittal documents and LEED Online enhancements that will help improve and enhance the user experience.
USGBC President and CEO Rick Fedrizzi states:
roofing contractors, cold-formed steel design professionals, architects and engineers, building owners, developers, facility managers and metal product manufacturers. The 2012 METALCON International takes
place Oct. 9-11, 2012 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, Rosemont, Ill. It remains the only annual trade show and conference focused on the applications of metal in industrial, institutional, light commercial and residential building projects.
“This is 100 percent in response to our members’ desire that we give them a bit more time to absorb the changes in this next version of the rating system. We want to do everything we can to ensure that the mar- ket can fully embrace LEED v4 because it represents significant progress on carbon reduction and human health. Greenbuild will provide us the perfect venue to experience the look and feel of the new system as an integrated package. Then we can take the first part of 2013 to make sure the consensus body has everything it needs for a successful ballot.” For more information, please visit
