Club Legacy Award. Gov. Rick Perry pro- claimed her a “Yellow Rose of Texas” in 2007. “It is with open arms and a grateful
heart that I stand before you to receive this tremendous award,” Dr. Connally said in receiving the award. “But, this award really belongs to you
and to countless others who have nur- tured, inspired, instructed, and encour- aged me. “Your contributions to the advance-
ment of medical care in this century have made it possible for meetings such as this today. “ ‘Thank you’ is inadequate to express
my appreciation and desire to honor you. You have given your hearts and lives — day and night. I am honored to be ‘one of you.’ “As we reflect on the progress of medi-
cine in the past century, we turn to his- tory as recorded in the lives of outstand- ing men and women who have given so much of their minds and hearts to the elimination of so many deadly diseases, the development of hospitals, clinics, re- search. “This has happened in times of wars,
drought, poverty, and wealth and plenty. “Today, as health care is being debated
in Washington, the future of medicine will be determined by the delivery of the most excellent care to every individual, regardless of ability to pay. “When the health care is delivered
to each individual with the excellence granted to ‘the greatest,’ health care in Texas and America will be ‘the best’ in the world. “Our challenge is to review our his-
tory of medicine [and] each day commit our lives to being and doing our best — wherever we are. “Then, we will know that the promise of II Chronicles 7:14 will be fulfilled. “It depends on you and me — not the government. “Do you have any idea how important,
how valuable you are? You are the only one who does what you do. Who do you represent? “Thank you. Let’s read, pray, think, act. This day will be forever in my heart.” n

Taking New Steps July 2012 TEXAS MEDICINE 17
TMA Foundation (TMAF) gala cochairs Walter Evans, MD, and his wife, Candy Evans, foreground, churn up the dance floor to the Beatles tribute band, A Hard Night’s Day, at TexMed 2012 in Dallas May 18. Almost 500 physicians, their spouses and guests, statewide community leaders, and corporate sponsors celebrated during the 19th annual gala. TMAF’s Dallas health leaders Fredye Factor and Sarah Losinger were recognized for bringing the talent and resources of medicine, business, and community together to help local and statewide health-related not-for-profit groups reach more Texans in need. A live auction raised more than $10,000 for the TMA and TMA Alliance programs TMAF supports: Be Wise — ImmunizeSM
, Hard Hats for Little Heads, the Ernest
and Sarah Butler Awards for Excellence in Science Teaching, and TMA’s Minority Scholarship Program.
