clinical training opportunities for Tex- as medical students.
• Oppose expanded distribution of raw milk and raw milk products in Texas;
• Support state programs against dis- tracted driving caused by use of hand-held devices and encourage the legislature to develop “appropri- ate regulatory actions” to reduce dis- tracted driving;
• Work with the Texas Department of Public Safety to improve the process- ing of applications for controlled sub- stance licenses, and
• Direct TMA to work with state and national specialty societies to develop strategies to improve pain treatment, and educate physicians about the lat- est opioid analgesia management to reduce misuse, abuse, diversion, and nontherapeutic prescribing.
The house also followed recommen- dations from its reference committees to reject resolutions to:
• Encourage medical schools to have at least one physician interview medical school applicants;
• Establish a task force of psychiatrists and pediatricians to identify causes of increasing inappropriate sexual behavior in children, and develop a strategy for physicians, educators, so- cial workers, and others to work to reduce it;
• Adopt new policy that adults aged 55–74 who smoke or used to smoke 30 packs of cigarettes a year talk to their physicians about lung cancer screening using low-dose noncontrast helical CT. The Reference Committee on Science and Public Health said there is not enough evidence to sup- port adoption, and there are concerns about cost and false-positive results.

It pro- moted Vice Speaker Clifford Moy, MD, of Dallas, to speaker, and elected Su- san Strate, MD, of Wichita Falls, as vice speaker. Dr. Moy, a psychiatrist, also chaired

New president wants more members
Houston neonatologist Michael Speer, MD, became the 147th president of the Texas Medical Association at TexMed 2012 on May 19. Here is the text of his installation address:

The level of that respect translates directly into what we can do for our patients, for our practices, for our profession. By being members of TMA, physicians
