Tarkett delivers solutions for 21st century learning environment
Making learning more relevant F
or the past ten years Shelfield Community Academy has commissioned a series of ambitious media projects, initially as part of the alternative curriculum for students in year 11 struggling with the standard curricular diet at KS4.
Coordinator Carl Palmer explains; ‘Film and television provide a relevant way in for these students; the work is accessible and inclusive. Standards of literacy, ICT, group work, problem solving and speaking and listening have been dramatically improved along with attendance, behaviour, attitudes to authority and self esteem.’ Informal tracking of participants over the years suggests a significant increase in positive destinations in further education and employment, along with a reduction in repeat offending. Most significant is the change in relationship to the education system and the genuine sense of positive achievement the completed projects help individuals realise.
This has been endorsed by two Ofsted Inspections at school; most recently an inspector spent time observing activity and interviewing participants, staff and parents. The Academy was given an ‘Outstanding’ assessment and the alternative provision was highlighted as part of this.
The approach has now evolved to include mainstream media studies students and this year more than 80 students have produced two films which will be premiered at the local multiplex. Carl Palmer - Shelfield Community Academy Jeremy Brown – Director Dialogue Media

Destroyed by fire in 2009, Campsmount Technology College in Doncaster has risen from the ashes with a new £10.5 million facility fitted out with a variety of vinyl flooring solutions from Tarkett. Micra Premium is used in all circulation zones and stairwells. A homogeneous, high quality vinyl flooring, it provides a hard- wearing, cost effective solution for high traffic areas and includes PUR reinforcement, removing the need for wax or polish and offering easy maintenance. Coloured borders were used to distinguish different areas and to aid navigation. Where safety underfoot was a key requirement a selection of safety flooring was used including Safetred Spectrum. To meet diverse uses of the school hall, one side has been fitted with Omnisports Compact, a 2mm thick point-elastic vinyl sports flooring and the other with Omnisports Excel, an 8.3mm thick point-elastic sports surface that combines higher shock absorption with strong surface reactivity for ball rebound and foot control.
