arlier in the year I visited a 3D technology day here in the UK run by Stemmer Imaging. Te event highlighted a good portion of the
techniques available for imaging in 3D, and there are quite a few, each with their own benefits and drawbacks. Stemmer obviously thought it worthwhile to promote such technology and if you go to any automation shows, especially Vision in Stuttgart in November, you’ll encounter examples of 3D vision pretty much everywhere you turn. It’s a popular booth exhibit and it has that ‘wow’ factor, largely because of the complexity of the task – companies will want to showcase their most impressive technology and 3D oſten falls into that category. And it is impressive – being able to control a robot arm to pick up a jumble of parts one aſter another is a highly complex vision task. However, the very complexity that makes it such
an enticing booth exhibit is what makes 3D vision difficult to implement on the factory floor. Te third dimension complicates just about all aspects of a vision system, from setup and calibration to image processing. Tat said, it does solve imaging problems that can’t be solved with standard 2D vision. Whether or not 3D vision lives up to the hype surrounding it is discussed in the article on page 10. Other articles in this issue include machine
vision’s use in metalwork (page 14) and agriculture (page 18). To subscribe for free to the magazine or to our e-mail newsletters, please visit
