Meeting OB market demands Philip Stevens looks at the latest HD upgrade truck to hit the road in Germany

Unit 7 becomes the latest vehicle in the Media Mobil fleet to be upgraded to HD
“THROUGH THE reconstruction and HD upgrade of our Unit 7 truck, we are responding to the increasing demand for medium- sized OB vans that can handle up to 10 cameras.” That’s the answer from Klaus Sandig, managing director of Media Mobil GmbH (MMG), when asked about the most recent upgrade to its fleet of outside broadcast vehicles. He adds that experience has shown that there is a specific need in Germany for vehicles of that particular capacity. In fact, the vehicle is already booked for a busy summer schedule. Based in Leipzig, MMG started outside broadcast production activities in 1999. Today, it operates a fleet of OB, ENG and SNG vans and Mobile Editing Units. “Our main focus is on light entertainment shows, concerts, sports, news and magazine formats,” reveals Sandig. “For any project one can think of, we can provide the appropriate transmission unit and the right team. Our OB vans are operated by well-trained and innovative
engineers, and we have several German TV stations and production houses among our customers. We also have clients in other parts of Europe.” Work on upgrading Unit 7
began about three months ago, and
The vehicle is based on a Daimler Benz Actros 2540 L tractor with a trailer that measures 12m long, 2.5m wide and 3.96m high. In addition, there is a 4.5m extension that can include a VTR suite.

the vehicle was back in use at the end of May. The main purpose for the work was to introduce HD facilities into this particular truck. “With the upgrade to HDTV, we have responded to the requirements of the market and ensure maximum capacity of the OB van for the coming years.” Sandig reports that the upgrade has involved providing replacement cameras, vision switcher, audio mixer, video router, monitors and glue equipment.
When it came to selecting a vision mixer, MMG opted for the Grass Valley 3 ME Kayenne. “We looked at three suppliers, but decided on this model. We already operate a GV switcher in another OB van, so are familiar with its capabilities. As well as meeting our technical requirements, the switcher allows us to have uniform technology across our OB vans. In our view, the Kayenne Switcher offers us high functionality and flexibility.”

Media Mobil has included
several other pieces of Grass Valley equipment in the refurbished vehicle. For example, Unit 7’s infrastructure is based on the Trinix NXT router. To ensure future proofing, the truck is equipped with a 256x512 router frame, currently fitted with a 160x192 matrix plus a 32 input multiviewer output. Incorporating the multiviewer
