Island-hopping becomes reality
Mike Clark reports on the key players involved in the production of an Italian reality TV show following a group of celebrities abandoned on deserted Honduras islands
THIS YEAR’S was the ninth edition of L’Isola dei Famosi, Italy’s successful reality show based on Charlie Parsons’ Celebrity Survivor format, produced by Rai 2, in collaboration with Magnolia.
Ten celebrities chosen from those who took part in previous editions and a group of newcomers were abandoned on deserted Honduras islands with rationed food and without a roof over their heads.
Extra rations (and items such as fishing tackle) were won by overcoming demanding tests on land and in the sea. Viewers called in to vote for the contestant to be eliminated each week and the ultimate survivor
won a cash prize and a donation to a charity. Key players involved in the
production explain the logistic and technical problems involved in staging a live show simultaneously from a high-tech

Milan studio hosting the weekly prime time slot and three uninhabited Honduras locations. Rai Production Manager Stefano Bettinaldi explains, “From Honduras, we receive three video signals, each with associated audio signals, and send them one video signal, also with four associated audio signals. There are also two backup ISDN lines. Here in Milan, cameras are three Philips LDK 20 and six LDK 100, plus a Grass Valley radio system and, as well as a 60m ceiling rail with a remote head and an 8m jib, a wireless camera on Tecnopoint’s small Filobus motorised trackless dolly provides highly original shots that would have been unobtainable otherwise. The production switcher is a Sony MVS-8000 and BLT and EVS systems are used for recorded video content.” Broadcast audio from 32
wireless microphones is mixed on two Stagetec Cantus consoles, whereas in-studio sound reinforcement is via Electro- Voice Evid 3.2 for speech and EV SxA 360, ZxA-1 and relative subwoofers for high-level audio, mixed on a Yamaha PM5D. The particularly complex intercom set-up has an RTS Adam digital matrix frame and 22 panels, plus 10 Clear-Com beltpacks. As well as 120 conventional
fixtures, lighting included 80 Robe LED Wash 600, 25 Clay Paky Alpha Spot Profile 1200, 60 Evolight Par LED Colour 54 and two Clay Paky Beam 1500, controlled via three Compulite consoles. Says Bettinaldi, “High-impact visuals are provided by a 17x5.2- metre motorised PVC screen, with four Barco FLM HD 20 20,000 Ansi Lumen 16:9 projectors, which opens to enable castaways to enter the studio on return from Honduras, an 8x4.5m Switchglass screen (switchable polarisation gives variable transparency), with two more FLM HD 20s, and another (semi-circular) 9x4m Switchglass screen, with motorised vertical movement and three Barco FLM R20 20,000 Ansi lumen 4:3 projectors. Playout is controlled via Dataton Watchout.”
Visibility and elevation For satellite transmissions, Rai Way (Rai’s network operator and owner of its signal transmission and broadcasting network) called in specialist firm Videe, who fielded a team manning two flyaway Ku-band sat stations, installed in the Palma Real de la Ceiba Hotel and on Cayo Menor, an island off the northern coast near the programme’s locations.
