UK AIRPLAY ANALYSIS BY ALAN JONES
ON ITS FOURTH WEEK atop the OCC sales chart, Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen’s debut smash, Call Me Maybe, finally reaches the radio airplay summit. Apparently a little surprised by its popularity – it was loitering at No.48 on the radio airplay chart when it hit the sales summit – radio has been catching up ever since, with the track moving 24-6-3-1. Its coronation comes at a time when support for Call Me Maybe is still growing fast – it added more plays than any other record last week, increasing
by 847 from 3,410 plays to 4,257 (a 24.84% uplift), while growing its audience 15.17% from 55.36m to 63.76m. Another huge debut hit, We Are
Young by Fun feat. Jonelle Monae, is chasing hard. Springing 29-8-2 in the last fortnight, We Are Young is far behind on plays (it was aired 2,343 times in the latest frame) but is closing the audience gap fast, adding 11.23m listeners last week to reach more than 56.83m pairs of ears. Fun have already overhauled Jepsen on Radio 1 –
Carly’s coronation: Canadian singer follows her sales chart success
where We Are Young was aired 24 times last week, twice more than Call Me Maybe – and Radio 2, where it was played seven times, compared to the latter’s zero.

TV airplay chart top 40 © Nielsen Music. Compiled from data gathered from last Sunday to Saturday. The TV airplay chart is currently based on plays on the following stations: 4Music, Bliss TV, Clubland TV, Channel AKA, Chart Show TV, DancenationTV, Flava, Kerrang! TV, Kiss TV, Lava TV, Magic TV, MTV Base, MTV Dance, MTV Hits, MTV1, MTV Rocks, NME TV, Q TV, Scuzz, Smash Hits TV, Starz, The Box, Vault, Viva, VH1
The highest climber and biggest
faller in the Top 50 of the radio airplay chart are both by former X Factor contestants. Olly Murs’ attempts to land another No.1 are stymied by the 4-27 decline of Oh My Goodness but Rebecca Ferguson snares her first bona fide radio hit with Glitter & Gold dashing 92-34 to eclipse the No.69 peak position of debut single Nothing Is Real But Love, and the No.75 peak of follow-up Too Good To Lose. Glitter & Gold was aired on 82 stations on the Music Control panel last week, 11 of them for the first time, with a top tally of 35 plays on Kingdom FM, and a useful 12 plays on Radio 2.
LaserLight holds at six on the
sales chart for Jessie J feat. David Guettawhile climbing 33-23 on the radio airplay chart. The track hasn’t won over Radio 1 in quite the same fashion as previous Jessie J hits, with just nine plays last week – a total surpassed by 29 other songs, and no increase on the previous week – and is entirely absent from Radio 2. LaserLight’s fairly slow progress on radio contrasts with its TV success – the track completes a 20-2-1 ascent of the latter list, with a grand total of 640 airings for its promotional videoclip last week, 57 more than Chris Brown’s Turn Up The Music. LaserLight’s top supporter was Chart Show TV (91 plays).
