YAMAGUCHI LAUNCHES IT’S A BIG WORLD, LITTLE PIG
Kristi Yamaguchi hasn’t performed on ice
for two years, but family, philanthropy and a new career as a children’s book author keep her plenty busy.
When the 1992 Olympic champion learned
that one in four U.S. children grow up not know- ing how to read, she resolved to use her Always Dream Foundation to do something about it. Her 2011 debut book, Dream Big, Little Pig, reached number two on the New York Times
bestselling children’s book list. In March, the second volume of Poppy the pig’s adventures, It’s a Big World, Little Pig, promote childhood literacy. “Childhood literacy is a new goal and a new direction that my foundation has been turning
to for a couple of years,” she said. “It’s taken that long to kind of get our ducks in a row. Now we have a couple of reading programs we’re launching this year that will hopefully be integrated into schools. “We’re going to pilot at some schools in [California’s] Bay Area but eventually we are
hoping it will take off from there.” It’s a Big World, Little Pig
The message that a smile can start a conversation in any language hit home with Yamagu-
chi, who began traveling abroad when she was 14. She opened her seven-city tour publicizing It’s a Big World, Little Pig with an appearance
at Morristown, N.J.’s William G. Mennen Sports Arena that drew hundreds of children, parents and grandparents to the ice rink, where a public skating session was in progress. — Lynn Rutherford

KWAN ELECTED INTO WORLD HALL OF FAME
Michelle Kwan can add another acco-
lade to her already extraordinary résumé. The champion and nine-time U.S. champion is the only inductee into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame class of 2012.
“I am so honored to be elected to the
World Figure Skating Hall of Fame,” Kwan said. “The Hall of Fame and its membership represent the highest ideals and accomplish- to become its newest member.” - ducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in January, is the most decorated skater in U.S. Figure Skating history. She dominated the sport for a decade, winning 43 champion- ships and setting the record for the most 6.0s in the history of the sport (57). Kwan’s accom- plishments are unmatched in U.S. Figure Skat- ing’s nearly 100-year history.
In addition to her skating accomplish-
ments, Kwan has also pursued her education, receiving a bachelor’s degree in international studies with a minor in political science from University of Denver and a master’s degree in international relations from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. In November 2006, Kwan was named a public diplomacy ambassador by Condoleez-
za Rice, a position that continued under the Obama administration. In April 2011, Kwan became an adviser to U.S.-China Women’s Leadership Exchange and Dialogue (Women- LEAD).
“I would like to congratulate Michelle
Kwan on being elected into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame Class of 2012 on her World Figure Skating Hall of Fame Chair of Nominating Committee. “Michelle continues to be a role model
through her many contributions both on and off the ice. On behalf of the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame, we join Michelle and her many admirers throughout the world in celebration of this great honor.”
