2012 U.S. SYNCHRONIZED SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS | JUNIOR
TEAM BRAEMAR TEAM BRAEMAR by JOSH ELLIS
After finishing second to the Sky- liners in 2011 and again at the 2012 World Junior Team Selection Compe- tition held in January, Team Braemar used its nearly three-point advantage after the short program to turn the tide and claim gold in Worcester. Similar to the competition in
January, Team Braemar (Braemar- City of Lakes FSC) led after the short program and earned the second-best free skate score, however, this time it was enough for a victory. “It feels like all of our hard work has finally paid off,” team member Breanna Hegseth said. “It’s unreal. We are extremely pleased with how the results turned out,” Taylor May added. Team Braemar performed a flaw-
less short program, skating to a song coach Pam May admitted she origi- nally listened to as a joke called “Blah Blah Blah Cha Cha Cha” and in a color, pink, that they have never worn before. Te team chalked up 54.55 points.
14 APRIL 2012 For its gypsy-themed free skate,
Team Braemar sparkled in its black costumes. Te skaters flowed from one element to the next and collected 7.20 points for their level four moves- in-the-field element, the highest of the competition. Team Braemar finished with a total of 159.65 points. “Tey were ready and they did a
great job,” May said. “I thought they gave it their all out there.” Te Skyliners placed second in
the short program, skating Lady Ga- ga's “Te Edge of Glory.” Trailing by 108.06 points and
with the words “Sky’s the Limit” be- ing held up in the stands, the Skylin- ers (SC of NY) took to the ice last wearing black and white and dazzled the crowd with their Black Swan free skate.
Teir event-best program was
rewarded with a standing ovation and the best component score of the com- petition of 62.06 points.
Te team finished with a free skate score of 106.83 points, an over-
all total of 158.42 points and the silver medal. “It was so much fun perform-
ing out there,” the Skyliners’ Jennifer Schwartzman said. “It was a wonder- ful opportunity for us and it was great to be out there together. It was such a great time.” Tird after the short program,
the Lexettes overcame an early miscue in their free skate to earn the bronze medal. Skating to songs from Rio, the
team from the Hayden Recreation Centre FSC earned 87.57 points for their free skate and 137.87 points overall.
“Te girls were fighters,” coach
Saga Krantz said. “Tere were lots and lots of great moments for them at this competition.” Posting the fifth-best free skate
score, Chicago Jazz held on to its fourth-place position from the short program to earn the pewter medal with 127.58 points.
