Kempa and Michelin introduce a new line of handball shoes
K
empa, the team handball equipment manufacturer, and Michelin, the world’s leading tire maker, will soon unveil a new line of handball shoes featuring a unique sole.
Kempa and Michelin created their first collection of handball shoes in 2011. Pursuing their partnership, the two companies will bring out a new collection in June. The cooperation between Michelin and Kempa is driven by innovation. From the beginning, the
two companies wanted to work together to develop a shoe with the focus on the outsole, given that this impacts on the performance of the sportsperson in the same way as tyres do on vehicles. The sole, the new shoe’s key feature, has a Michelin rubber compound, which improves abrasion
resistance by 40%. It also has the additional benefit of absorbing less dust from the playing surface. France’s Guillaume and Bertrand Gille and Germany’s Pascal Hens, who play together on the HSV Hamburg team, took part in the development process. All three wear the shoe. “Combining our experience and the Michelin engineers’ expertise made it possible to develop models that were optimized by handball players for handball players,” says Bertrand Gille. “The Michelin soles on the Kempa shoes meet players’ highest expectations in terms of grip and floor contact,” adds his brother Guillaume. Paul Sherratt, Country Manager says “The new Michelin rubber formula provides the optimum
balance: It’s strong enough to provide total control, yet not so strong that it might risk damaging joints and bones. The answer to the rigorous demands of handball.” Kempa manufactured the shoe while Michelin was in charge of developing the sole. Inspired
by Michelin racing tyres and created for team handball players, the new 2012 collection will be available in European sporting goods stores beginning in June.
