Water-to-Go case study

“ The most advanced water bottle in the world?”

A variety of innovative products were showcased at SMMEX. Among those was Water- to-Go’s water bottle fi lter which is set to take the sports and outdoor trade by storm.

A

ccording to the World Water Council, one in six of the world’s population does not have access

to clean drinking water. Everyone needs access to clean water but wherever we are, there is not always adequate access. Water-to-Go bottles allow you to

drink, pure, clean water wherever you go without the need for a purifi cation plant or the need to carry bottled water. The product works using a small fi lter that fi ts into the neck of a ‘Water- to-Go’ bottle and thus delivers pure, clean water instantly wherever you are. As well as having pores that are a fraction of the size of those in a carbon block fi lter, the fi lter is positively charged so it traps contaminants, which, by nature, are all negatively charged. For Water-to-Go’s Dave Shanks, this means their water bottle is ‘the most advanced in the world’. “There is not another fi lter that

takes out 99.9% of both viruses, bacteria and diseases as one group and heavy metals and poisons such as arsenic and lead as another. We have a worldwide patent and the nano- technology which is exclusive to us, has been developed by NASA.” With a 50cl single use water bottle costing around £1.00, this means water is more costly than a litre of

petrol! The fi lter on the Water-to- Go bottle lasts for up to 40 gallons (around 3 months) of water and so means for £5 you can have an ongoing supply of pure, clean water anywhere and at anytime. This obviously ensures that the product is a more cost eff ective bottle but also has the added benefi t of being an eco friendly product that will undoubtedly be an attractive proposition to environmentally conscious consumers. “In the US and Europe, 70 billion single use water bottles are consumed annually”, says Dave Shanks. “Only 12% of these are recycled; the rest just enter a landfi ll or end up in the rivers or seas. By encouraging the use of Water-to-Go bottles, it will hopefully encourage a decline in the number of animals that die every year due to a direct consequence of plastic poisoning. Over a million mammals and birds die every year and this number could easily be reduced by using products such as ours” In addition to this, according to

Water-to-Go, the oil used in the manufacturing process for the bottles consumed in the US in 2009 would have fuelled 100,000 cars for an entire year. With only a fi nite resource of oil available, fi lter bottles certainly encourage a more sustainable approach to living.

For sporting, outdoor and holiday

activities, the Water-to-Go bottles enable a simple and easy to use water storage system without the need for a complex fi ltration system. Whether it be from a river, stream, tap or even rainwater, the bottle enables the individual to drink water without the worry of contamination. As well as having the added bonus of being an environmentally friendly product, surely bottles such as these will become the norm in years to come and a profi table product for retailers.
