DÜSSELDORF FACTS

A tip rate of 10% is considered the norm for taxis and waiters.

The population of Düsseldorf is just under 600,000. 11,000 of these are Japanese.

It is considered Germany’s second-richest city, and ranks sixth in the global list of cities with the highest quality of life (first in Germany).

Messe Düsseldorf organises nearly one-fifth of the world’s premier trade shows.

Every July, more than 4.5 million people visit the city’s Fair on the Rhine funfair.

Düsseldorf is the home of avant-garde electronic music band Kraftwerk.

Düsseldorf is known for its mustard served in a traditional pot (ostertpöttche), which is immortalised in 1884 in a still life by Vincent van Gogh.

In German, umlauts can be transcribed as ue, so the correct spelling of the city when no umlauts are available would be Duesseldorf. To replace an umlaut with a single vowel is incorrect and will simply give a nonsense word. However, “Dussel” is a dated word meaning “fool”, and “dorf” means “village”, so “Dusseldorf” actually means “village of fools”. Avoid making this error unless you wish to upset the locals.
