IWN THE CITY ITH NOREEN KHAN

We asked BBC Asian Network’s drive time presenter Noreen Khan about city driving overseas.

icky Gervais reckons that New York taxi drivers are the

most crazy in the world! What do you reckon?

He’s obviously not been to India or Pakistan then!

Having said that I was in New York last year and the NY taxi drivers are crazy! Me and my friend were sitting in the back thinking ‘Oh my God we’re going to die!’ But that’s how it felt because they drive so fast.

In India and Pakistan it’s completely different - you’ve got to go there to experience it. Not only are you fi ghting with other taxi drivers and other traffi c, you’ve got rickshaw drivers, people on bikes,

animals randomly wandering in and out and people absolutely everywhere! You don’t indicate you just hoot at everyone so when you’re in the car it’s just constant beep beep beep to get the cows out of the way or a dog will run into the road or you’ll get someone on a tractor, a kid on a bike you’ll have people on motorbikes. And it’s just crazy!

I was in Mumbai a few years ago in India and I’ve never seen anything like it. The joke is that you know there’s a God when you’ve been driving in India or Pakistan. It’s amazing how everyone’s so alert on the roads I’m surprised there’s not more casualties but then again they’re just so used to it and they’re so careful…
