LIFE TO GET THAT

DRIVING FAST – YOU’VE GOT YOUR WHOLE

Did your head injury put you off doing the more dangerous driving stunts on Top Gear? [laughing] Well, I’ll think twice before driving a jet- powered car again! I take the same view I always have – I look at the risk and if it’s acceptable and manageable then I’ll do it. I’m quite a cautious bloke by nature, nothing’s changed there. And I wouldn’t be as mildly adventurous as I was before, that’s a given.

Any long term physical damage or scars? I’m so, so lucky. I wasn’t even left with a scar, which actually, I feel slightly robbed because of that! But I was in a coma for weeks, pretty badly

broken, and yet, left with absolutely no scars. Well I’ve one by my ankle, but honestly, that could have been there before. I wanted the scars to feel manlier [laughing]. All the damage was to my brain. And yes, I’ve heard all the jokes, so don’t try any!

But let’s not joke. I nearly died in that thing. And people are maimed and crippled doing much lesser speeds than that. It’s a dangerous business.

So have you made any changes to your lifestyle? Not really! I don’t really drink very much now. When I was leaving hospital, the doctors were like, ‘Now look, you’ve been very, very lucky, so we’ll be really cross if you do anything wrong to hurt your body’ and they warned me about drinking. Of course the crash wasn’t caused by drinking, but my body was still very fragile, so I didn’t drink for two years. As a result of that, I just don’t really fancy the taste much now.

Did your insurance sky rocket? Strangely enough, my insurance never went up. But again, it was a jet car on a runway, not the most normal of circumstances!
