67865 JAKE WARDROP’S DIARY: A Tank
Regiment Sergeant’s Story by George Forty Jake Wardrop was actually born John Richard in Glasgow, 1918, and he enlisted in the army in 1937 after being unable to settle in various other jobs. The diary he kept, from the fall of France in 1940 until April 1945, is the basis for this remarkable first-hand story of bravery. Jake fought against Rommel in North Africa, in the drive up through Italy, the liberation of France and the Low Countries and the invasion of Germany itself. It was here, whilst enlarging a bridgehead over the River Weser on 10 April 1945, that his regiment was attacked in an ambush. Bailing out of his damaged tank he was cut down by machinegun fire, dragged to safety by his comrades, but then discovered by an enemy sniper who finished him off. He was buried where he died by his comrades. Photos and maps. 248pp. £17.99 NOW £6.50

67983 THE BLITZ: An
Illustrated History by Gavin Mortimer The winter of 1940-41 was the season of the Blitz. From the very heart of London to the cities of the
Midlands, throughout the length and breadth of the land, the bombs rained down as Germany attempted to bludgeon Britain into submission. Although journalists and photographers were out on the streets with ordinary citizens, fire-fighters and ARP wardens witnessing the terrifying events of the Blitz for themselves, many of their stories and incredible photos were never published - the victims of wartime censorship, forgotten in an archive for 70 years. Today, the author has scoured the unique photo archive of the Mirror newspaper group to unearth some of the most inspiring images of the Blitz, from the famous photo of St Paul’s in the flames to a number of incredibly moving images that have never been made public. Alongside are stories taken from contemporary sources, newspaper articles, diary entries and interviews with survivors. 196 large pages, archive photos.

67866 FIGHTER BOY: Life as a Battle of Britain Pilot by Barry Sutton
By the age of 23 Barry Sutton DFC had experienced more excitement, terror, fear and elation than most of us experience in a lifetime. A Hurricane pilot of 56 Squadron, and a dashingly handsome one too, he was based at North Weald, one of Fighter Command’s most important stations. This book is based upon his personal diary of the Battle of Britain and focuses on the year between September 1939 and September 1940, during which he shot down three Luftwaffe aircraft, was himself shot down twice, and married his WAAF wife Sylvia in the middle of an epic air battle. After recovering from his burns injuries, he went back into the air, downing a further four enemy aircraft over Burma and ultimately served the RAF for 29 years, ending his career as Group Captain. 60 b/w photos. 185pp. £18.99 NOW £7
68047 HOLOCAUST by Charles Reznikoff
Reznikoff’s subject is one people’s suffering at the hands of another. His source materials are the US government’s records of the trials of the Nazi criminals before the Nuremberg Military Tribunals and the transcripts of the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem. None of the words are his own - instead he has created, through selection and arrangement of courtroom testimony, a poem that involves in the voices of the perpetrators and the survivors of the Holocaust themselves. He lets the terrible history lay itself bare history’s own tongue. Newly reset edition. 96pp in paperback. $15.95 NOW £5
68316 BARNEY
BARNFATHER: Life on a Spitfire Squadron
by Angus Mansfield Riversdale Robert ‘Barney’ Barnfather was an RAF pilot who flew Spitfires in action almost continuously from November 1941 until the end of the war in Europe. Barney saw action in the offensive sweeps over France, in the desperate air battle for Malta, the fighting in North Africa, the
invasions of Sicily and Italy, and finally on the fringes of the Third Reich over Austria in 1945. This type of experienced and brave pilot formed the backbone of Fighter Command and after many operational flying hours, clashes with enemy aircraft and even a mid-air collision, Barney survived it all relatively unscathed. Here is an enthralling history of a Spitfire pilot’s escapades. 242pp in paperback with photos. £9.99 NOW £3.50

Why are Bibliophile’s books so cheap? In many cases, our mint condition books are publisher overstocks, exactly as originally published. Choosing the number to print has never been an exact science and Bibliophile culls backlists and offers to reduce stocks for publishers. Buying in bulk discount is how we can pass on savings to our customers. The published prices quoted are the last price at which the publishers were selling the titles when we bought our stock. In some cases, books may contain earlier prices. All are hardbacks unless paperback is specified. YOUR DELIVERIES

allowed thousands of miners to enlist in the armed services. By 1943 the war effort was in danger or grinding to a halt because of a lack of coal. In answer Ernest Bevin, the Minister of Labour, sought service volunteers and compulsorily sent 18 years olds who had expected to fight for their country down the mines. Some were so angry that they preferred to go to prison. The majority went on to do their best but some were psychologically and others physically unsuited to such dangerous work. 68094 FORGOTTEN VOICES OF THE BLITZ
AND THE BATTLE FOR BRITAIN by Joshua Levine
Features remarkable first-hand testimony from pilots, soldiers, fire-fighters, air-raid wardens and civilians, all drawn from the Imperial War Museum’s Sound Archive. In June 1940, British citizens prepared for an imminent German onslaught. Hitler’s troops had overrun Holland, Belgium and France in quick succession, and the British people anticipated that an invasion would soon be upon them. Bewildered, sad and often angry, sometimes bitter, but for the most part these are above all remarkable voices. 486pp, illus paperback. £7.99 NOW £3.50
