68806 ANTIQUE MAPS BRENTWOOD AND
EAST LONDON: Sheet 72 published by David & Charles Originally published in 1805 as a single sheet, the Brentwood copper-plate map was re-engraved in 1843- 44 on four quarter plates, here trimmed and bound together. The triangulation for Essex was undertaken in two main phases as part of the operations to establish the distance between the meridians of the Royal Observatories of Greenwich and Paris. The work fixed the line of the meridian of Greenwich and a primary station at Severndroog Castle on Shooters Hill within the area of the Brentwood sheet. Further landmarks were located such as Limehouse Church and Wanstead House in the south west of the sheet. There were further interior stations at Brentwood Steeple, Billericay Cathedral and Epping Mill. Extensive railway revision was inserted after 1854 and the revisions continued to attempt the changing topography of East London; Pool is renamed The Pool and instead of the name Shadwell Dock, Tunnel has been inserted. Part of Stepney fronting the river has been re-engraved, a towpath flanks the Regents Canal and an arrow symbol to indicate locks. To the north of the layout of Upper Edmonton and Enfield Park the suburb of Tanners End has been named. From the upper pool in the west, Rotherhithe, the Isle of Dogs, Woolwich Reach, Gravesend right out to Southend is covered in fabulous detail. The marshland to the north of the river from Canvey right across to West Ham is clear and virtually not built on. Golly, how much has changed! And the area around Margaretting, Danbury and Chelmsford is remarkably hilly. Another lead title in this major series of antique maps to collect. Finely crafted and engraved and of interest for all local historians. £4.99 NOW £2.50
68995 WHITEHALL: The
Street that Shaped a Nation by Colin Brown
Whitehall, the hideaway of all those bowler-hatted mandarins who really run Britain, is built on top of a Tudor palace whose ruins were uncovered during the building of the present Ministry of Defence in 1939. It was here that Henry VIII had his wine cellar and kept fit on the tennis court, cutting a dashing figure in his black velvet tennis coat. Elizabeth
I’s tough resistance to foreign invaders and domestic plotters was played out in Whitehall and Charles I was executed at Inigo Jones’s newly built Banqueting House, an event witnessed by Samuel Pepys who played truant from school. In 1914 Asquith summoned Kitchener, described by Kipling as a “fat pharaoh in spurs” from his command of the Egyptian Army to become War Secretary. Churchill laid his strategy for countering a possible invasion here, building the network of tunnels under Whitehall which were later developed into a nuclear bunker. 388pp, colour and b/w photos. £17.99 NOW £6.50
69032 CORNWALL: A Concise History by Bernard Deacon
Cornwall, one of Britain’s most popular tourist destinations and also one of its most picturesque and beautiful counties, is also one of the least understood. In the county today there is a greater recognition of Cornish identity, and the ties with Wales and Brittany are closer than ever before. Viewed as both Celtic country and English county, the region is a land of contrasts, this book traces the creative tensions produced by its unique history, from an independent British kingdom through a culturally distinct medieval province, and a prominent industrial region in the 18th and 19th centuries, to its present location as a post-industrial paradox: nation, region and county all wrapped in one. 247 page paperback.

69289 BIG-PRINT QUILTS: 15 Projects Using Large-Scale
Fabrics by Karen Snyder Here fabric designer and quilt shop proprietor Karen Snyder has one message - Be Bold and Go Big! Usually the big print fabrics that are sold in quilt shops tend to be used for borders and backs, but here Karen shows you how to incorporate large scale fabrics into
beautiful traditional and non-traditional quilts, by both keeping them whole or cutting them into smaller pieces. In her introduction she discusses the vast amount of big prints available today and how using them can appear at first daunting for the home quilter. She categorises them, then shows how they are best employed, before moving on to her general instructions section which incorporates the four golden rules of big print quilting - accurate cutting, a ¼” seam allowance, good pressing technique and “measuring through the middle” when measuring up for your borders, which ensures your quilt lies flat. The 15 projects include quilt and table runners and include the Grand Prix for the petrolhead in your life, the visually stunning Picture Window, Big Thunder, Grand Daddy and Big Sky and the delightful cowboy themed “Hercules”. Every project is described in intricate detail with all measurements, requirements and instructions plus colour photos and diagrams all the way. Create a handmade object of beauty for your home. 112pp softback, 8¼”×10¾”, colour. £16.99 NOW £6.50
