PETS

If animals could speak, the dog would be a blundering outspoken fellow; but the cat would have the rare grace of never saying a word too much.

- Mark Twain 69336 FUR BABIES: Why We

Love Cats by Liz Jones Compiled to raise money for the Celia Hammond Animal Trust, this is an anthology celebrating cats who belong to so-called celebrities, though everyone knows who is the real Big Cheese. Ricky Gervais has a very beautiful Tonkinese given to him by Jonathan Ross; Tracey Emin “can’t believe that God would have made something so perfect” as her

beloved Docket, whose hobbies include making sculptures out of cardboard boxes. Catherine Tate’s Tiger Rose was chosen because her daughter wanted a dog, and owing to a gender miscalculation he was called Rose at first, but in spite of these setbacks Catherine loves him, even if her daughter is not sure. Stephen Appleby celebrates the strange and unintelligible activities of cats in cartoon form, while Celia Haddon’s guide on How to Understand What Your Cat is Saying includes the important advice that a cat twitching or lashing its tail is usually considering an attack. A cat “gives another colour to the weft and warp of your daily actions”, according to Stephen Berkoff. Jilly Cooper’s cats are all named after conductors, and Rattle likes to have his breakfast, chopped chicken, in bed in his flat. 144pp, softback, colour and black and white photos and illustrations.

69622 HORSE AND PONY BODY LANGUAGE

PHRASEBOOK by Susan McBane

Is your horse plotting against you? Is he feeling under the weather? Learning to interpret the 100 signals in this book can lead to a more harmonious relationship between

humans and their equine companions. Each mood or signal is accompanied by a colour photo, and the messages include “I’m faster off the blocks than a car (so don’t get in my way)”, “Is someone talking about me?”, pointing out that horses have very acute hearing, and “Oh no! I’m home alone”, a reminder that horses want company, ideally others of their species but if not, then human or other animal companionship. “Don’t mess with me!” is a message that while horses do not have a leader or boss, the herd has a fairly clearly defined hierarchy and another horse may be warned off by striking out with a foreleg. Mating is initiated by the female and happens quickly to avoid vulnerability to attack, while mares prefer foaling in privacy and darkness, sometimes holding back until they feel safe. Bereaved mares can become savage but not all are good mothers, and some foals harass their mothers. A greeting between horses is a whinny, while the louder neigh signals the need for company or support. A fascinating book. 208pp, colour photos on every double spread.

69362 PET HEAVEN: The Animal Accessory Bible

by Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne The front cover of this irresistible book shows two gorgeous standard poodles wearing home-knitted flowery coats, while a line-up of pet fashion on the back includes a hamster looking out of what seems to be a blue tea cosy. This is billed as “a collaborative housing project for you and your rodent: no more living in a cardboard box or shapeless ball of sawdust- covered fluff” and in addition to eight cute photos, full instructions for knitting the housing project are given on the next page. Other projects include a puppy papoose similar to a baby-carrier, an incredibly smart belted dog coat made out of an old stripy sweater, a knitted rosette to brighten your pony’s life and a beautiful knitted cage cover for your budgie. The authors admit that the pattern of leaves may not give your bird the illusion of being in a forest but it will be a pleasure for you to look at while the budgie is asleep. An anti-firework dog balaclava has built-in ear muffs to reduce the noise and is also pretty stylish. Finally, a knitted pet is altogether cleaner, quieter and cheaper, and instructions are given for your custom-made fox terrier, ferret, guinea pig and tortoise. All projects come with full step by step instructions and templates. 144pp, softback, numerous colour photos and diagrams.

68571 MEERKATS OF SUMMER FARM by Jayne Collier

An utterly charming and funny memoir subtitled ‘The True Story of Two Orphaned Meerkats and the Family Who Saved Them’. It was on a cold February morning during her regular morning rounds at an animal park in Devon that Jayne Collier discovered a litter of newborn meerkats, apparently abandoned by their mother. Dangerously cold, she took the three tiny pups and coaxed them to life on top of the family’s Aga. Two of the three survived, were hand reared and named Wren and Rascal. They joined a pretty normal family - mum, dad, son and daughter, two dogs, a cat to outstare, oh and a few wallabies, several owls, RJ the racoon and Ringo the bad-tempered crane (ghastly to look at in the photo!). 184pp in paperback with colour photos. £6.99 NOW £3.50

68954 CASPER THE COMMUTING CAT by Susan Finden

Every cat lover has a favourite cat and Susan’s special and unforgettable cat was Casper, who became a national celebrity when newspapers ran the story that he regularly took the number three bus on an 11 mile journey around his hometown of Plymouth. His devoted owner wondered where her elusive pet was disappearing to each day and discovered that Casper was brightening the lives of countless commuters. Casper expected the good things in life - a warm seat on the bus, a nice meal when he got home and a cuddle when he settled down for the night. He was sadly killed by a hit and run driver in early 2010. Colour photos. 230pp in paperback. £6.99 NOW £3.95

68992 UNDER THE PAW: Confessions of a Cat Man by Tom Cox

Brilliantly funny and moving, Tom Cox might have seemed like a regular sort of bloke - a lover of late nights, rock music and beer - but he had a dark, furry secret. He was a cat lover. For a while he kept his passion in check but then he met Dee, his moggy-loving soul mate. He left London and his job as a rock critic behind and together the couple and her cat Janet and three new kittens moved to a remote part of Norfolk, thinking their cat madness had reached its limit. They were wrong. Tom here recalls the chaos of owning seven of the most charismatic, idiotic and duplicitous cats in the country. On call around the clock for multiple bowls of Whiskas, Tom encounters death, depression, flying fur and the first human sentence spoken by a feline. Then there is the heartbreaking story of The Bear, his oldest cat who may or may not have been an evil genius. A book to have you in stitches and make you laugh and cry. 240pp in paperback. £7.99 NOW £4

PSYCHOLOGY AND SOCIOLOGY

Minds are like parachutes: they only function when they are open.

- Lord Dewar 69477 CRAZY AGE:

Thoughts on Being Old by Jane Miller

How lovely to read a book that states: ‘I like being old at least as much as I liked being middle-aged and a great deal more than I liked being young ...one has more time and space in which to think ones thoughts... and there may be moments when we understand what’s going on for the first time.’ But then, as she admits, she has always been a late developer!

Although references to pain and degeneration are unavoidable, there are also fun reminiscences of times when sex became of prime importance, followed inevitably by babies but, luckily, now that she has reached old age, sex no longer seems to matter. Readers are treated to an analysis of how other authors view old age, some, notably Margaret Atwood’s and Jenny Joseph’s descriptions, rib-ticklingly funny. Our author ponders whether Western grandmothers can learn
