68001 EGYPT’S SUNKEN TREASURES by Franck Goddio and Zahi Hawass In 1984 the author was invited to take part in an underwater investigation of Napoleon’s fleet which was sunk in the Bay of Aboukir. The project uncovered an even greater treasure: the submerged cities of Canopus and Heracleion, both important ancient centres located near Alexandria. Among the underwater discoveries was a statue of the fertility god Hapy, a Hermes, the remains of a sphinx and the beautiful statue of a queen portrayed as Isis-Aphrodite. The exhibition “Egypt’s Sunken Treasures”, which this book was written to accompany, reveals the whole process, from bathymetric maps and photos to the final exhibition, which is catalogued in the final chapter. Among the other artefacts photographed and discussed in detail are a red granite Sphinx from Canopus, the Stele of Ptolemy VIII detailing the ruler’s good deeds, the breathtaking gold dedication plaque from Heracleion made in the name of Ptolemy III, statuettes of Horus, Isis, Sekhmet and Thoth, an extraordinary-looking early falcon-headed crocodile-sphinx from Alexandria, and a Roman-era priest carrying an Osiris-Canopus jar. 10" x 11". 400pp, glorious colour photos. £35 NOW £8
68881 QUEEN’S CONSORT: England’s Medieval Queens by Lisa Hilton
Lisa Hilton’s meticulously researched heavyweight tome examines the lives of the 20 women who were crowned queen between 1066 and 1503, re-evaluating and reconsidering the facts and fiction surrounding those that history has celebrated, such as Eleanor of Aquitaine, wife of Henry II, and illuminating the lives of those that history has forgotten like Adeliza of Louvain, second wife of his father, Henry I. War, adultery, witchcraft, child abuse, murder, sex and even love were all part of medieval queenship, but so too did patronage, learning and fashion - Hilton considers the evolution of the status and office of queen alongside the individual women and in so doing skilfully dispels the myth that medieval royal brides were little more than diplomatic pawns. From quirky vignettes, such as Eleanor of Castile’s (Edward I) eccentric love of fruit, to major inputs like Anne of Bohemia’s (Richard II) contribution to the Protestant Reformation. 482pp, colour plates, maps and family trees.

69013 PISTOLS AT DAWN: A History of Duelling by Richard Hopson
Trial by combat as a judicial method of settling differences between men began in Europe in the Dark Ages. From the duel’s roots in medieval chivalric tournaments to the unforgiving code of honour in which death was preferable to shame, this fascinating history recounts with the aid of numerous very vivid
eyewitness accounts, all the drama and sheer terror of the practice of duelling. Looks in depth at the challenge, the role of seconds, the age of the musketeers 1559- 1660, the Grande Siècle, dynastic rivalries, duelling in the colonies, in Ireland, in the US, France, Germany and Russia, in Georgian and early Victorian England right through to duelling in the 20th century. 68963 EMPERORS OF ROME: Imperial Rome
from Julius Caesar to the Last Emperor by David Potter
The 500 years that followed the accession of Augustus were an era during which Rome reached the heights of economic prosperity and cultural achievement, but also plumbed the depths of anarchy, cruelty and chaos. This history of the rise and fall of the Roman Empire is packed with vivid accounts of the most celebrated and notorious Roman emperors including: Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero, Dimitian, Trajan, Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius, Commodus, Diocletian and Constantine. One murdered his mother, another fought as a gladiator, two were philosophers, another desperately wanted to be a God when he died, and yet another is revered as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church - but what did they all have in common? 255 large paperback pages, colour illus and glossary.

68017 ROYAL MUMMIES: Immortality in Ancient Egypt
by Francis Janot and Zahi Hawass
Among the gorgeous illustrations are Tutankhamun’s golden mask, with its broad collar of lapis lazuli, quartz and green feldspar ending in two falcons’ heads and a representation of the jackal god Anubis from the
tomb of Seti I, wearing a light-blue wig. This book not only covers the rituals of mummification including embalming, amulets and Books of the Dead, but also describes the discoveries and identifications of key figures in Egyptian ancient history. Hawass describes the process which led him to the identification of Queen Hatshepsut’s mummy using the remains originally discovered by Howard Carter. Scanning the mummies of Hatshepsut’s close relations was the first step, and a wooden box containing her cartouches was the final key to the riddle. The box also held a single tooth which was shown to belong to the fat lady known as KV60, and the identification was then complete. 10" x 14". 366pp, with colour illus, many in double spread. £40 NOW £15
68997 ALEXANDER THE GREAT AND THE
HELLENISTIC AGE by Peter Green For the Hellenistic period, probably the most profitable archaeological evidence came primarily from Athens, Rhodes, Pergamon, Ephesus, Miletus and Aï Khamun in Afghanistan. Only now is Alexander’s empire beginning to be fully realised and one of the most interesting and valuable new techniques is landscape archaeology. The Hellenistic Age flourished for only 300 years and was a rich and hedonistic era, characterised by bloody political and military violence. It featured a colourful tapestry of characters - incestuous and ruthless monarchs, glory- hunting warlords, philosophers, courtesans, libertines and dramatists to name but a few. Green’s history chronicles the years between the death of Alexander the Great, the world’s greatest conqueror, and Cleopatra, the world’s
most legendary Queen. A spectacular story. 234pp in paperback with maps and family trees. £8.99 NOW £4
68986 OTHER PEOPLE’S DAUGHTERS: The Life and
Times of the Governess by Ruth Brandon The governess is an ancient institution. Traditionally she was employed by aristocratic families to live in their houses and educate their daughters. During the 19th century, governessing became both the normal method of educating middle
class girls and a way of keeping destitute ladies off the streets. In the 1851 census, 25,000 women, that is 2% of all unmarried women between 20 and 40, described themselves as governesses. Literate and the confidantes of their wealthier employers, they were regarded as not only insignificant but were generally kept poor, and the possessions of the poor rarely survive. So their journals and letters have really only survived as papers preserved relating to the famous and several have celebrity connections in this selection - Eliza Bishop’s and Everina Wollstonecraft’s letters were only kept because they were related to persons so notorious that any scrap of paper might throw light on them. Nelly Weeton’s letter-books were found mouldering on a junk shop shelf. And probably the most famous governess of all was Anna Leonowens whose story became ‘The King and I’. Marooned within the confines of other people’s lives, neither servants nor family members, governesses occupied an uncomfortable social limbo. This book gives a vivid picture of what it was like through the daily lives of these women with their suppressed fury, romantic daydreams and intellectual frustrations. A riveting insight into the social attitudes of Victorian England. 303pp with 16 pages of colour and b/w photos. £8.99 NOW £4
69012 THE NOBLE REVOLT: The Overthrow of Charles I by John Adamson
Using a mass of newly discovered evidence, this magnificent study comprehensively charts and re- evaluates the political upheaval that led to the overthrow of King Charles I. Traces the fortunes of a small group of English noblemen who risked their lives to challenge the rise of an authoritarian monarchy, and to create a new religious and political order in Britain. What they achieved in 1641, that ‘year of wonders’, astonished and alarmed contemporaries, for they brought about seismic change: the trial and execution of the king’s most powerful minister, religious reformation and drastic curbing of the powers of the crown. Unfortunately, their ambition and radicalism provoked a crisis that would see civil war ravage the Stuart realms. 742 paperback pages with colour and b/w plates, maps, list of abbreviations, family tree. £16.99 NOW £5.50

GUIDE TO WATERCOLOUR by Gerald Green
How can an amateur watercolourist get that loose, confident style which characterises the greatest painters in the medium? In this user-friendly book the author explains watercolour technique in clear bite-sized paragraphs. The Jigsaw Method
means you work up the picture in sections, seeing the subject as a simplified group of shapes. The use of blank space is vital in watercolour and the artist needs to learn how to judge relative tone across the whole canvas. A restricted palette creates energy, especially with the introduction of a contrasting colour in a limited area. The author emphasises the importance of planning a painting with regard to light, composition, focus and tonality, and when all the preparations have been made the idea is to work quickly. 123pp, softback, illus on every page. £12.99 NOW £6
