U.S. FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS THE MAGIC RETURNS! SAN JOSE PRODUCES ANOTHER CLASSIC EVENT T
he past, the present and the future shared the spotlight at the 2012 Pru- dential U.S. Figure Skating Champi-
onships, Jan. 22–29, in San Jose, Calif. Bay Area skating greats such as Peggy
Fleming, Brian Boitano, Debi Tomas, Rudy Galindo, Kristi Yamaguchi and Charlie Tick- ner extended a warm welcome to everyone who walked through the turnstiles at HP Pa- vilion.
Tese icons of the sport signed auto- graphs, took photographs with spectators, spent time with the current crop of athletes and served as ambassadors for the sport of fig- ure skating. It was moving to see Galindo rec- ognized and celebrated in the place where he made history at the 1996 U.S. Championships in San Jose. One of the unforgettable moments of the
week occurred with the Hall of Fame induc- tion and on-ice recognition of Michelle Kwan. A packed house stood and cheered as the
sport’s most decorated athlete walked onto the ice and delivered her heartfelt message. Attendance for the eight-day event to- taled 102,619, and no one left disappointed. Each of the four senior disciplines provided excitement and drama. Ashley Wagner and Jeremy Abbott deliv-
ered programs that won’t soon be forgotten. Te new pairs team of Caydee Denney and John Coughlin were dynamic, while Meryl Davis and Charlie White, for the fourth con- secutive year, led an extremely strong ice dance field.
Te future of U.S. Figure Skating also
shone brightly. Gracie Gold and Nathan Chen, and novice skaters Karen Chen and Vincent
Zhou, entertained and wowed the crowds. A strong contingent of junior and novice pairs and dance teams made a lot of noise as well. Giving fans the ultimate Championships experience, U.S. Figure Skating led the way with Downtown Ice, just a short walk from HP Pavilion. Fans spent their down time and evenings skating at this unique outdoor venue, which was adorned by 70-foot palm trees lit up for the holidays. Many skating greats, such as Johnny Weir and Sarah Hughes, skated at Downtown Ice with their legions of fans. Tere were those who couldn't make it to
San Jose: Nearly 9.5 million viewers watched NBC’s nine hours of coverage of the U.S. Championships and Smucker’s Skating Spec- tacular.
Icenetwork.com reported that it had 5.1 million page views during the event.
