TECHNEWS IN ASSOCIATION WITH POINT BLANK’S PRODUCTION TIP OF THE WEEK GET THAT MIAMI POOL PARTY DEEP HOUSE VIBE!
DANNY J LEWIS SHOWS YOU ANOTHER WAY TO TWIST UP A VOCAL USING A CUSTOM ABLETON LIVE EFFECTS RACK.
Point Blank Online School brings you weekly fresh nuggets of music production advice, courtesy of their team of pro producer course developers and tutors… This week, Danny J Lewis (Defected/Enzyme Black) takes the reins...
“It’s that Miami WMC time of year and what better time to look at a pool party-
inspired deep house vibe that is reminiscent of the Hot Natured sound that’s popular right now? In this example, we’re looking again at the subject of vocal processing, although the main focus this week is on ‘re-grooving’ an existing vocal. When you are composing a track, you can actually get away with plenty of repetition on the musical elements if you can evolve a vocal effect suffi ciently over time. The original vocal in our example is a spoken word phrase that has been pitch-shifted using Ableton Live’s famous audio warping technology. Invoking the HQ button keeps the audio quality as high as possible when shifting pitch, something that is often important when working
with vocal recordings. “Manipulation of the phrasing of the vocal is the key to this effect, and the process comes alive when you map a MIDI controller. In our example, we’ve mapped rotary controls to the following parameters:
•Loop Start •Clip Start
to enable realtime manipulation of the start of the loop
•Loop Length to enable realtime control over the length of the loop
to allow you to adjust where in the loop the clip starts playback
•Transpose to enable further pitch modulation
“To get the best of out this technique, make sure you set the global quantize on the transport (which defaults to 1 bar) to something like 1/8 divisions (8 subdivisions per bar). This means you get more fl exibility when adjusting the parameters assigned to the rotary controls. The best way to ‘record’ what you do is to create a new audio track, route the signal from the vocal track into it, arm it for recording and then push the record button on the session view. This will record any of the changes to the sound you perform. When fi nished, you can go through the performance and pick the best of the bunch to bring
