LOCALITY AND LEGACY That’s the big picture. Other alternatives exist for more localised areas, such as Allen & Heath’s iDR-based solutions both at London’s Tottenham Hotspur football club and Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium. At Tottenham Hotspur, the main ticket office gets understandably noisy on match days and the club turned to a digital ‘talk through’ system to improve quality: an iDR-8 digital processing unit with expansion units iDR-in and iDR-out forms a 16 x 16 matrix and puts paging, delays, EQ, gates, compressors, limiters and remote preamp control under PC management. Eight Shure MX412D/N microphones are input to the iDR on the cashier side, feeding eight Work Studio 3 loudspeakers on the customer


side; conversely eight Beyerdynamic MPC 65 half- cardioid microphones on the customer side address Canford diecast powered speakers on the cashier side.


Indeed, the opportunities for audio are everywhere. Compare the Tottenham solution with the local system in the Luzhniki Stadium, where the press and VIP centre features Allen & Heath’s iDR DSP matrix mixer and a GL4800 multipurpose mixing console. There’s a 275- capacity conference hall in the press centre, with 80 stations and eight individual reporting booths for journalists and a bar. The iDR-8 combines with iDR- in and iDR-out expander units for additional inputs and outputs, creating a system with the full capacity of a 16 x 16 digital matrix. The 32-channel GL4800 has been added in response to the essentially live nature of the application: it offers manual control of all the audio feeds during potentially spontaneous conferences.


QSC AND AUDIOLINK KIT OUT ITALIAN SPORTS VENUE


Italian distributor for QSC Audio Products, AudioLink, has supplied a comprehensive audio system to the Palazzetto dello Sport Paolo Ferraris, Casle Monferrato, Italy. Four KLA line arrays were


mounted above the two main stands, each comprised of three KLA12 active, two-way loudspeaker elements – intended to deliver both power and projection without restricting the view of spectators. K10 and K8 active loudspeakers were deployed at ground level to provide discreet sound reinforcement around the court itself.


Nearly every aspect of the system at the multipurpose stadium can be controlled via an iPad running the Q-Sys Controller app and Q-Sys designer software. Users can


assemble custom user control interfaces (UCIs), a feat said to place practically any element of the system at his or her fingertips.


"Q-Sys was the ideal solution for the PalaFerraris. The totally flexible architecture of the Q-Sys Core and the intuitive nature of the Q-Sys Designer software mean that configuring the entire system to fit the needs of the venue is exceptionally quick and easy,” says Stefano Cantadori, head of AudioLink. “Our on-site specialist Giammario Piumatti, who is there to assist the client with programming the system, loves it because any last- minute ideas and requests can so easily be integrated, just as the system can easily be adapted in the future to cope with the evolving needs of the venue.”
