THE WAREHOUSE, LEEDS

Leeds’ oldest club, The Warehouse, to celebrate 33rd birthday this month...

CAST your mind back to 1979 (if you can). Margaret Thatcher was prime minister; Kraftwerk released a mind-boggling animation for ‘Autobahn’; the sparkling arpeggio of ‘Your Love’ was a mere twinkle in Frankie Knuckle’s eye. And, believe it or not, it was the year Leeds’ 1000-capacity stomping ground, The Warehouse, was born.

But that’s not to suggest Leeds knows something we don’t; that while the rest of us were donning ‘fros and fl ares to ‘If You Think I’m Sexy’, a hidden corner of the west Yorkshire city was trance-dancing in white gloves to the cerebral gurgle of the Roland TB-303. No, siree. The venue

showcased the likes of Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Sugar Hill Gang during its early years, until picking off the likes of Sasha, LFO and Mike Pickering one-by-one during house music’s golden years.

So, after re-opening in September last year following a fi ve-year hiatus, what better way to commemorate the venue’s 33rd birthday than with a four-hour acid house set from godfather of the scene, Frankie Knuckles? Throw in Ron Basejam’s cosmic crusaders Crazy P too, plus some support from the residents, and we

have ourselves quite a party.
