“AN 808 kick drum sample also makes a great bass sound, we all know that, but what can you do to bring the sound alive and add an extra dimension? Let’s have a think about the sound itself - it’s comprised of a short punchy ‘front’ and a long booming ‘tail’. It is not bright enough for example to apply a low pass fi lter with modulation; the fi rst thing many people will think of when wanting to add ‘movement’ to a sound. The fact is that the source sound is simply too ‘dull’ in tone to get suffi cient excitement. If we want to add more energy across the frequency ranges we’ll have to put our thinking caps on.
