Inspirational Athlete Mentors available N

The exciting world of science I

ow in its ninth year, Sky Sports Living for Sport, a free initiative delivered in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust, uses sport stars and sport skills to improve the lives of thousands of young people in secondary schools across the UK. The 13 new Athlete Mentors, including 2012 hopefuls Commonwealth gold medallist Leon Baptiste and 2011 Great British women’s boxing champion Amanda Coulson will represent Sky Sports Living for Sport, visiting secondary schools across the UK to inspire and motivate pupils to apply the life lessons they’ve learned through sport to all aspects of their lives. Leon, Amanda and their fellow Athlete Mentors have been specially selected by the Youth Sport Trust because of their unique and inspiring personal journeys, overcoming a range of challenges to achieve success.

The Athlete Mentors’ school visits are a fundamental part of Sky Sports Living for Sport and a major incentive for the thousands of pupils taking part as they get to meet and speak with one of a selection of sport stars.

During a school visit the Athlete Mentor shares their story with the young people, talking not only about their sporting careers, but more personally about the challenges they have faced in their own life. These visits help pupils understand how sport has enabled the Athlete Mentor to overcome issues and barriers in his or her life, providing tangible proof that lessons learned through sport, such as determination, respect and confidence can be applied to all areas of their daily lives to help them achieve their goals.

Darren Campbell, Ambassador of Sky Sport Living for Sport, comments: “2012 is a huge year for sport and this academic year Sky Sports Living for Sport is bigger and better than ever. This fantastic new line-up of inspiring Athlete Mentors will be key to us reaching and motivating many more young people in schools across the UK this year.”

With the help of online planning tools, resources and a supply of free sports clothing, Sky Sports Living for Sport has benefitted 35,000 young people in over 1,500 schools since the programme began in 2003. This year 750 schools across the UK will benefit from a visit from a Sky Sports Living for Sport Athlete Mentor.

f you run an after school club, reading group, or any other type of youth group, the Royal Society, the UK’s national academy of science, would like to invite your group to help to judge the winner of this year’s Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize, which celebrates the best books that communicate science to young people aged up to 14. The books can be factual or fictional, just as long as they make science exciting – no textbooks or encyclopaedias allowed! Publishers across the UK have been submitting their best recent books that communicate science to young people and an adult judging panel will narrow down the choice to a shortlist of six books. Following that, groups of young people will discuss the books and collectively select the winner. Participation is open to any group of young people that is able to read and discuss the shortlist and recommend their choice for who should win.

Groups who are selected to take part in the judging will receive a complete set of the six shortlisted books for them to read, discuss and vote for their favourite book. Each group’s entry will then be sent back to the Royal Society, who will count up the votes and announce the overall winner in late 2012. 75 groups will be selected to receive a complete set of the shortlisted books free; however, if your group isn’t selected to receive a set of books, you can still participate if you’re able to buy the books yourself. Please note that the prize is open to groups only and applications from individuals cannot be accepted. Applications from groups to participate in the judging process must be received by Monday 30 April 2012. If you would like to enter on behalf of a school group or other club, please visit http://royalsociety.org/sciencebooks/young-people/judges/.

Battle of the young entrepreneurs S

chools and colleges in Yorkshire are being challenged to put their business brains to the test with the launch of this year’s Umph! enterprise competition. A line up of successful Yorkshire entrepreneurs, including Mark Fletcher, chief executive of online global sports network Pitchero, and entrepreneurial chef Matthew Benson-Smith, are lending their weight to the contest. Also on board this year is Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire and previously head of a string of high-profile businesses including Johnsons Cleaners and Prontaprint. Dean Hoyle, Card Factory founder and chairman of Huddersfield Town Football Club, is also playing a key role in the contest. The brainchild of financial adviser Grant Thornton, the contest, which takes place in Huddersfield in July, will see the teams of students pit their wits against each other using the award-winning business simulation software, SimVenture. The students will have the chance to take part in workshops with the entrepreneurs and, with their teachers, will hear firsthand the secrets of their success in business. The winning team will scoop the prestigious 2012 Umph! trophy and each team member will receive their own iPad. Following the success of last year’s Umph! competition, teams of four 16-19- year-old entrepreneurs from across Yorkshire, who will represent their school, sixth form or FE college, are invited to enter this year’s contest online at www.umph.uk.com.

The competition is part of Grant Thornton’s Educate to Innovate programme, which aims to encourage entrepreneurialism and forge links between businesses and education in the region. Also supporting Umph! this year are Huddersfield Town Football Club, SimVenture, Dickinson Dees, Fantastic Media, Kirklees Council and Huddersfield University.
