School security made easy S
chool building specifiers are faced with complicated safety and security issues, to carefully balance security of staff, pupils and visitors with accessibility and safety.
Here, Tina Hughan, Head of Marketing at ASSA ABLOY, the global leader in door-opening solution, looks at the issues faced by local authorities and the solutions available.
School buildings should always provide a warm and inviting environment that stimulates learning and development.
However, with school safety concerns intensifying nationwide, architects and school managers are concluding that while schools should not operate as secure fortresses, security features must be integrated into remodeling and refurbishment plans.
When specifying security systems, all aspects of school buildings should be considered, from the outside perimeter systems through to internal classroom security, whilst complying with current industry standards and Building Regulations.
And when developing plans for a school, it is important to design the school boundaries well, with signs and perimeter and external locking methods used to demonstrate respect for and ownership of property. Time and again it has proven to show that these qualities then tend to be reciprocated by students, staff and the community.
Exterior doors should be secured with hardware that is unobtrusive and does not affect the aesthetics of the environment.
School entrances and doorways must create a positive and welcoming first impression, whilst at the same time incorporating appropriate and necessary security devices such as locking mechanisms, intercoms and access-card readers.
Once inside the building, protecting the “assets” of a school is also complex. This ranges from the protection of physical buildings to securing equipment, which may be extremely valuable, through to managing data or sensitive products or materials, especially in University and College science and laboratory facilities.
ASSA ABLOY Access Control has developed a wide range of integrated solutions to protect people and equipment in education environments, combining locking products, Access Control, security and automated doors. One such integrated solution is the Aperio™ system – a smart technology that enables mechanical locks to be wirelessly linked to an existing Access Control system, with very minimal need to modify the door. Aperio™ offers cost effective expansion of almost any current system and is a versatile security solution to better meet the needs of remodeled or refurbished education facilities. This can help with threats, including theft, vandalism and trespass and safeguards wellbeing of pupils, staff and property, which is paramount.
In conclusion, by taking a journey through a typical school building, it is clear that as the demands on operational efficiency and expectations for high levels of staff and pupil care increase, the requirement for intelligent, discreet and effective security and access control solutions is strong than ever.
