ICT - Networking and Communications

An additional benefit of the chassis switch was its power saving technology, which meant that the school could boost its green credentials. ‘D-Link Green’ technology includes a power saving mode, smart fan, and time-based PoE (Power over Ethernet). This means that the switch can automatically power down ports that are not in use, only turn on fans when a specific temperature in exceeded, and turn PoE on/off per port by a pre- defined timer, which overall reduces power consumption and helps the school remain eco- friendly as well as reducing utility bills. Working closely with D-Link’s channel partner ICT Networks, the implementation went smoothly with the new wired solution (consisting of some 40 switches) up and running within two days. This meant minimal disruption and virtually no down time.

The school is now effectively supporting virtual learning environments with a reliable high speed network at the core.

The school has recently introduced full multimedia virtual learning portals to enhance pupils’ development. Following the implementation, the load on the school’s network has doubled overnight with no degradation in performance. This means that the users are now able to download or stream content without it affecting usage elsewhere in the school. Amongst the benefits, this has enabled RGS to deliver the latest multimedia content to all its users, concurrently and enable pupils and staff to continue to have fully mobile accounts. Everyone can access, edit and use any sized multimedia file they like. Such has been the success of the

implementation at the Senior School that RGS has

now also replaced all the switches in its two Junior Schools with D-Link DGS-3620 managed switches, meaning that its entire wired network is supported by D-Link products.

Portakabin launches new website P

NELAN had a bigger stand and more visitors than ever. The hottest area was the Cyclone Android player and Enterprise Content Management System. Cyclone was demonstrated driving content not only to traditional digital signage players but also to websites and shelf edge screens. A further feature that sparked a lot of interest was the QR code generator which makes it easy for anyone to use QR codes in their digital signage application. This combined with ONELAN’s Ad Hoc content management interface allows a user to select content relevant to them or even add messages. The videowall dominated one side of the stand with Samsung 46” displays in a unique configuration driven by a ONELAN NTB 6000 and a Datapath X4 controller. Potential applications for the new HDCP compliant HD Capture Solution include bars, cafés, gyms and hotels to live events - wherever customers want to combine full HD TV/video with multi-zone layout designs.
