Flooring & Ceiling Refurbishment Flooring in Education Establishments

Comment by Louise Swift, Public Sector Sales Director, InterfaceFLOR

“The pressure is on for anyone involved in purchasing materials or equipment in the education sector. With budget cuts and tighter controls on how finances are spent, specifiers and procurement managers are quite rightly looking for long-term value in any products that they buy and conducting full life cycle assessments to ensure they receive the best return on their investment. “This involves looking at every aspect of the product, so when it comes to flooring, specifiers in the education environment need to balance cost with durability, performance characteristics and maintenance. A cheaper product may seem like an attractive option on the surface, but in reality, this could be a false economy if it doesn’t deliver in the long- run and needs replacing after a relatively short period of time.

“Using carpet tiles as a floor covering can help with extending maintenance cycles, making it an ideal choice for busy, high footfall environments. If a small area is damaged beyond repair, for example, the particular tile or tiles can be simply replaced, rather than the entire carpet being taken up.

“This is particularly the case for carpet tiles which are random in pattern. This not only makes installation quick and easy as there is no need to worry about matching patterns but also, there is the benefit of being able to replace individual tiles without the constraints of colour compatibility. This means that in busy areas, such as corridors, carpet tiles from the middle of the walkway can be switched with those along the edges to balance the wear on the carpet.”
