A question of survival T
here’s a rather international flavour to our news section this month, where we
cover stories including Internet lotteries in Greece, AWPs in Germany, and redemption in Japan. But very likely the most important development for our British readers will be one much closer to home: a meeting between BACTA and the government, at which the trade body will call for modifications to the Machine Games Duty (MGD) that is scheduled to come into force in 2013. The key problem that BACTA has identified following a
report prepared for it last year by Ernst & Young is that while MGD may indeed be – as the government says – revenue- neutral for the amusements industry as a whole, it is likely to hit some operators significantly harder than others. Add this to all the other pressures currently felt by arcades in particular, and it is very likely that some will close, further weakening the economies (and the consumer appeal) of seaside resort towns. There are things to be said in favour of MGD. On the
surface of it, after all, it seems fair that a highly profitable machine should pay more tax than one that’s barely used. But this may be a case where the theoretically just solution should be revised for the sake of the greater good.
